Cherokee, Iowa-- Harry L. Young, 79, of Los Altos, Calif., formerly of Cherokee, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Westgate Rehabilitation and Specialty Center in San Jose, Calif. from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, with a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. at First Church in Christ in Cherokee, with Gregg Johnson officiating. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Prairie View Cemetery, Paullina, Iowa.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.
Mr. Young was born April 20, 1920, in Larrabee, Iowa, the son of Lee and Vella (Traver) Young. He graduated from Gaza High School in 1937.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He had been a resident of California for 50 years and had lived in Hawaii and Iowa a few years.
He married Veniece Miller on July 6, 1985, in Cherokee. He had previously been married to Ellen Marie Beckett.
For 20 years he had owned a number of Round Table restaurants in California, as well as other businesses. He had been a pilot for a number of commercial airlines for 20 years, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Retired United Airlines Pilots Association. He enjoyed playing the electric organ and repairing cars.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ronald Young of Tustin, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Smith of Newmarket, N.H.; two grandsons, Matthew and Evan Young; two sisters, Velma Mae Jones of Bassett, Neb., and Iona Myrtle and her husband, Howard Peckham of Marion, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Percy Allen; and a sister, Avalie Alice Skaggs.
