John T. Conn (1862-1946)

Services were held Friday afternoon for J. T. Conn, who passed away after a lingering illness, at the age of 84 years, at Foley's funeral home.

John T. Conn was born Jan. 11, 1862, near Marengo, Ia., and passed away Aug. 21 at the Hand hospital in Hartley. He was the son of Robert and Adaline Conn.

He received his education at Blairstown academy and graduated from the law department of the State University in 1889 and moved to Hartley in 1891. He was married to Ida L. Messer in 1894 who passed away Oct. 7, 1915. He resided in Hartley since 1891 except two terms that he served as county auditor. He was a member of the board of supervisors when the new courthouse was built. He was a member of Masonic lodge A. F. and A. M., a past master, and had a 500-year certificate, also a 32nd degree Mason and member of the consistory.

During World War Two he acted as appeal agent of conscription.

February 11, 1936, he was married to Mrs. Ruby Boyre. Surviving are his widow, son Max. E. of Ames, a daughter, Mrs. Helen Morgan of Huntington, W. Va., a step-daughter Mrs. Ruth Ewoldt of Sanborn and five grandchildren.

Rev. G. E. Scheider, pastor of the local Methodist church had charge and Att'y Lampman conducted Masonic services. Pallbearers were Hugo Ewoldt, E. Burns, A. F. Palmpuist, H. J. Grotewohl, W. H. Hesse, W. H. Meier. Edwin Sawyer sang, accompanied by Mrs. H. B. Pike at the piano. Interment was made in the family lot in Pleasant View at Hartley.
