My Grandfather, Marcellus G. McClellan, was born in Sheldon, IA. Sept. 18, 1882. As A young man he traveled west. In western Nebraska, he met & married Maude Long. They homsteaded 3500 acres in Niobrara, Co. Wyoming, registered the Y-3 brand and had 3 children, Robert (my Father, now deceased). Lloyd, & Josephine.
Grandfather died, in Emporia, Ks. Aug. 14, 1943. { Kansas & Wyoming State records}. My Great Grandfather, Elbert H. McClellan (AKA Bert) was born 22 Oct. 1853 in Erie, Co. PA. He Died 13 May, 1917 in Floyd Twp. Sheldon, IA. of appendicitis & obstruction of the bowels. (probably peritonitis). The attending Physician was Dr. Milo Avery. His illness lasted 4 days.
He was married at the time of his death to my Great Grandmother, Carolyn G. {Gracie} Reddell, who is the listed informant. The undertaker was Thomas E. Mason, of Primghar, IA.
Children were: Marcellus G., Levi, & Freddie {who died at age 3 of diptheria}. {1800's census, page 209B, O'Brien, Co. IA., East Lawn Cemetary, Sheldon, IA. records, Perkins 1897 file 332}. My Great Great Grandfather, Marcellus G. McClellan, (who my Grandfather was named after), was born in Erie, Co. PA in 1827. He enlisted as A Sgt. in Co. "L" 137th NY. Infantry, during the Civil War. He Mustered out near Bladesburg, MD. June 9th 1865. He homsteaded the NE. 1/4, section 10, O'Brien, Co. IA. in 1872. He moved to Sheldon, IA. in 1883. He was A charter member of the Congregational Church, Sheldon, IA. & A member of the Sheldon, IA. GAR. post. He died in the O'Brien, Co. Old Soldiers Home, 15 Mar. 1889.
He was Married to Rachel Brush, Their children were: Elbert H., William, Nettie, Grace & 2 who died in infancy. {O'Brien, Co. 1800's census, East Lawn Cem. records, Perkins file, p38, 120, p31, 112-13, 118, 120, 395, 426. Shee & Montzheimer "Old Soldiers of O"brien, Co. 1909" records,}
My Great Great Great Grandfather, Henry McClellan(d), Born: PA. abt 1774-78, No further info. other than he is listed as the Father of Marcellus G. McClellan in the "old Soldiers of O'Brien, Co. 1909. The only other listing of A "Henry McClelland" in that time frame is A "Henry McClelland" the son of James McClellan of Sadsbury, PA. in the Bonnie B. Lacey records. I hope to get to Pa. this year to try and dig up some info on the elusive "Henry."
