The O'Brien County farm consists of 320 acres
of as fine land as can be found in Northwest Iowa.
For a good many years the County Supervisor
rented it to parties who would care for the paupers,
and in addition paid a cash sum of $2.50 per capita
for all paupers thus cared for.  Four years ago a
change of policy was inaugurated and the Board
engaged a steward and matron, paying
them $50.00 per month to take care of the farm,
paupers, stock, etc.Mr. M. E. Clark was made steward
and his capable wife matron and under their charge
great improvements have been made at the County home.
When Mr. Clark took charge the fences and buildings
were in bad repair, all the fences being off line, and he
has rebuilt them all, put the buildings in splendid shape,
cleaned the farm up in many ways, until today it is one
of the neatest, cleanest and best kept in the county.
1340 rods of woven wire fencing has been built which
is but one of the many improvements.  In addition to
his regular duties on the farm Mr. Clark has taken a
keen interest in better roads and by persistent use of
the King drag has kept the roads along the County Farm
in almost  ideal condition, as well as dragged the road
from the farm in almost ideal condition, as well as of
one and one-half miles, frequently, so that the road is
counted a model one.  Mr. and Mrs Clark are socially
inclined and frequently have entertained parties of young
and older people from town, the farm being a favorite place
for picnic parties in the summer and the gathering of
sleighride parties in winter.  O'Brien County is to be
congratulated on securing the services of so efficient a
steward and matron for their property, and if the wishes
of the voters of the county are considered Mr. and Mr. Clark
will be retained in the position for many years to come.
