AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

In March of 1925, at Wilton Junction, Iowa, 33 women who were wives, mothers and sisters of service men of World War I, signed a charter which admitted them as an Auxiliary of Wilton American Legion Post No. 584. Members who signed the charter were : Nellie Griffith, Frances Kelley, Isola Wacker, Rosa Grunder, Irene Atkinson, Blanche Looney, Anna Rottman, Lizzie Nagel, Mae Sterner, Caroline Maurer, Vesta Murdock, Margaret Looney, Ida Maurer, Julia McCartney, Catherine Looney, Mildred Frank Nopolous, Mildred Thurston, Happy Jane Hudler, Blanche Kretschmar, Mary I. Thurston, Anna Voigt, Amelia Wacker, Helen Shuger, Theresa Bujewski, Ida Frances Crispin, Ollie M. Gruiffith, Kate Bacon, Olga Bacon, A. Estelle Laucamp, Elizabeth Marticke, Clara Ellis, and Mary Walters. The first elected oficers were ; Nellie Griffith, president; Isola Wacker, secretary; Ida Frances Crispin, treasurer; Caroline Maurer, chaplain; and Margaret Looney, sergeant-at-arms.

The present membership of the Auxiliary is 45. Now serving as officers are: Blanche Shea, president; Ruth Kiser, first vice-president; June Wall, second vice-president; Bessie Brenner, secretary; Judie Duffe, treasurer; Sarah Henderdon, chaplain; Nellie Griffith, sergeant-at-arms; and Frances Kelley, historian. Irene Atkinson, at the present time, is serving as vice-president of the Muscatine County organization.

There are three Gold Star Members belonging to the local chapter. They are: Anna Rottman, who lost a son, John Rottman, in World War I; Harriet Sample, whose brother, Arthur Nagel, died in World War I; and Rose Freeland, whose son, Robert Freeland, was killed in World War II.
