Mr. & Mrs. JOHN G. DESHLER
Jan. 10, 1878 (hand written)The TRIBUNE of yesterday morning contained the announcement of the sudden death of John G. Deshler, from apoplexy, in Columbus, Ohio. As Mr. Deshler has two of the children of the late Jacob Butler living with him, and as he was well and favorably known in this vicinity, our readers will be interested in the following brief account of his life, which we clip from a Columbus special to the Cincinnati Enquirer:
Mr. Deshler was born in this city in a frame house on West Broad street in 1817. He was appointed District Attorney of Iowa by General Tyler, who was the President. About the same time he was married to Miss Faulkner, of Hamilton, Butler county, and moved with her to that State. From Iowa he Moved to Buffalo, N. Y., and engaged in the commission business. He was elected a number of times to the Legislature. Some years after he returned to this city. Lived in Muscatine.
At the time of his death he was sixty years of age, without a child to bear his name, but he was devotedly fond of children, and while out riding it was always noticed his carriage was crowded with little ones he had picked up about the city. Many years ago he went into the banking business. While sitting on the steps outside a bevy of children were always hovering around. The Franklin National Bank at times resembled a school, such were the crowds of little ones.
Not many months ago he bought a block of houses, refitted them, painted, and made nice homes, and gave the use of them, rent free, to those of his old neighbors and friends who had been less favored in the battle of life than he.
Mrs. Deshler has been lying at the point of death for number of days, and at times her life was despaired of. Thus far it has not been deemed prudent to inform her that her devoted and generous husband has been called away. It is sad, indeed; for years Mrs. Deshler has devoted much of her time and money in alleviating the sufferings of the sick and deserving. Mr. Deshler is estimated to be worth about one half million. He has another brother who is President of the National Change Bank in this city.
****** A special to a Chicago paper from Columbus, Ohio, announces the death of the WIDOW OF MR. JOHN DESHLER, formerly of this city, lately deceased. In her will she donates her fine residence to the city for the purpose of establishing an art gallery.--- Feb. 14, 1878 (hand written)
