SUEL FOSTER’S HISTORY OF MUSCATINE—
SOME CORRECTIONS

SANTA CRUZ, Cal. July 14, 1876

DEAR JOURNAL: --- Your Weekly of the 7th inst. Gives Suel Foster’ History of the early settlement of Muscatine city and county, which is manifestly incorrect in facts and dates, and is only a partial statement of the early settlers.

E. E. Fay, L. C. Hine, and Mr. St. John came in 1836. W. W. Webster, Joshua Stearn, Browning Stearn, Arthur Washburn, Frank Casey, Mr. Hunter, Solomon Bair, John Cobb, John Marble, Daniel Edgington, Samuel Kinney, and Samuel Parker came in 1836. (and omitted by Mr. Foster.)

He also omitted H. H. Hine, P. Fay, S. C. Trowbridge, Cephas Pettibone, Thos. Morford, John Morford, Jeremiah Barg, Myron Ward, Alexander Ward, Fire Water Cole, Joel S. Yates, John C. Cole, Mr. Mitchell, J. O. Morrow, Mr. Vanderver, Samuel Colver, Dr. H. Lee, druggist, John Kindler, Dr. Maxon, Abijah Whiting, Wm. Todd, Hackett Sany, Jesse Brogan, Thomas Chinn, John Frierson, John Main, Aaron Blanchard, all of whom came in 1837 and should so be recorded.

In his list of farmers, he omitted Silas Lathrop, Isaac Lathrop, Samuel Shortridge, John Briggs, Mr. Clark, Wm. Starks, Thomas Starks, Robert Davis, J. J. Huber, Holliday Wiley, Sam’l Holliday, Thomas Holliday, John Holliday, Mr. Goldsbury, Jacob Kiser, Wilson Wright, Robt. Graham, Levi Thornton, Err Thornton, Lot Thornton, Daniel Mauck, Geo. Storms, Sam’l Storms, Silas Richardson, Fifield Richardson, Callon Rayburn, A. Cone, R. Lord, A. T. Banks, Lewis T. McGrew, Jacob Long, John Miller, Wm. Beard, James and Peter Bidwell came in ’35, ’36, and ’37.

In 1838, B. F. Howland, J. W. Brady, Aliniaz Blanchard, J. M. Kane, Geo. Barney, Mr. Hawkins, I. C. Day, Benj. Rush Petriken, Wm. S. Ayres, A. West, James Beatty, John W. Champ, Geo. M. Kinsley, John M. Kidder, J. M. and Alonzo Brockway, Wm. Tebow, and others I cannot now call to mind.

If Mr. Foster’s history is to go on record, let it be corrected, as I know he does not want to do an injustice to the facts. Very truly yours,

P. FAY

P. S. Moses Couch knows all these parties and the time of coming, or H. H. Hine knows as well.
