Old Settlers Meeting --In Memory of William McCormick

At a meeting of Old Settlers held at the Mayor’s office, Aug. 27th, 1875, J. Bridgman, Esq. being chosen Chairman stated the purpose of the meeting to be to take the usual action on the death of one of our number, William McCormick.

On motion the Chair appointed H. Molis, M. Block and M. Couch a committee on resolutions, to report at 2 o’clock this afternoon.

The following were chosen as pall bearers – M. Block, A. M. Winn, I. R. Mauck, M. Couch, Wm. Parvin and Wm. Chambers.

The committee reported the following resolutions, which were adopted:
Your committee, appointed at the Old Settlers’ meeting, held at the Mayor’s office, on the 27th August, to draft suitable resolutions on the death of our esteemed fellow citizen, William McCormick, would respectfully submit the following:

WHEREAS, It has again pleased the Almighty to take from our midst one of our fellow citizens by death; and, whereas, we are hereby reminded that we or any of us may soon have to follow him to that undiscovered country from whose borne no traveler ever returns; and, whereas, we here recognize and see that one by one we are going and soon none will be left --- therefore, be it


Resolved, That in the death of our fellow citizen, his wife is bereaved of a good husband, his only daughter of a kind and indulgent father, and the community of a good and honorable citizen.


Resolved, That, while we bow with submission to the divine will of our Creator, we express our heartfelt sympathy at the loss of our brother.


Resolved, That we respectfully recommend and invite the old settlers to attend his funeral in a body.


Resolved, That these resolutions be published in our daily papers and a copy sent to the bereaved family.
