A Nonogenarian Passes Away

One of the city’s old and well-known residents, MRS. KATE STONE, departed this life at 8:15 o’clock yesterday morning, at the Old Ladies’ Home on North Mulberry. She had been ill only since Sunday, pleurisy and the infirmities incident to old age being the cause of her death. Mrs. Stone came to Muscatine with her father, Dr. Fairchild, by river from Cincinnati in the spring of 1840, and was married the following July to Fred H. Stone, for many years a prominent druggist in this city, and who died about sixteen years ago. Mrs. Stone was endowed with great personal beauty, and on coming here was considered one of the handsomest girls in this part of the country, her charms of person being equaled only by her beautiful traits of character. She was the first inmate of the Old Ladies’ Home when that institution was founded four years ago, and is the first to pass away within its portals. She was 83 years old last September, and is survived by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Kate Hayes, recently of this city, but now living in Omaha.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock, with the services conducted by Rev. H. D. Herr, of the First Congregational church.
