THE FINAL SUMMONS
July 10, 1897 (hand written)

With shocking suddenness occurred the death of a well known and highly respected citizen last evening at 6 o’clock when BENJAMIN W. LEYDA fell dead in his yard at his home, No. 508 East Eighth street. He was reclining on a couch after partaking of some nourishment at the supper hour, when his wife and daughter went about to perform household duties, but within a few moments the latter was startled to find him lying prone on the sidewalk near the house and face downward. Summoning her mother and a neighbor, they tenderly carried the unconscious form into the house, but ere the physician who was sent for arrived, the spirit of the old gentleman had left the tenement of clay which had been its earthly habitation for a period longer than the allotted three score and ten years.

Mr. Leyda was a native of Wayne county, Ohio, first seeing the light of day on May 13, 1823. He was united in marriage with Miss Sarah C. Aughey at Worcester, O., June 8, 1844, his faithful spouse and six children mourning his taking off, the children being Elizabeth, wife of N. M. Brown, and J. Alva, of this city; Marion and Howard M., of Chicago; Leon E., of Burlington, and Miss May Leyda, at home. Mr. Leyda came to Iowa in the early 50’s, first locating in the northwestern part of the state, but for the past 36 years had continuously resided in Muscatine. In early life he engaged in agricultural pursuits but in this place followed the occupation of marble polisher, retiring only when compelled to by advancing age. Since last fall he had been in broken health, his affliction which terminated with unexpected suddenness, being cancer of the liver. Religiously deceased was a member of the M. E. church and was esteemed as a good and worthy citizen in every relation of life. The funeral has not been arranged for but will probably occur to-morrow.
