MRS. HARRIET S. LAWRENCE
Aug 16 1895 (hand written)Mayor Lawrence mourns the death of his aged mother, who passed away last evening at 5 o’clock at his home, No. 1111 North Mulberry street. The deceased has been in failing health since the demise of her late husband, S.L. Lawrence, who departed this life three years ago last September. Cancer, with a complication of kidney trouble, were the ailments which rendered her a hopeless invalid, and latterly dimmed her mental faculties, so alert, so that the summons to join those gone before was to her a welcome one.
Harriet S. Morgan, which was the maiden name of the deceased, was born near Chautauqua, N.Y., on May 24th, 1848, and there spent the years of her girlhood, moving subsequently to Branch county, Mich., where she was united in marriage to the late S.L. Lawrence. In 1856 they came to Iowa, locating on a farm in Moscow township, and there resided for nine years, at the expiration of which period they moved to Wilton, their home thereafter for over a quarter of a century. Last fall Mrs. Lawrence left Wilton for Bowling Green, Mo., where she remained until spring, when she returned to this county, and for the last six weeks has received care and attention lavishly and affectionately bestowed at her son’s home.
Three children mourn her death – Mrs. Dr. James McNutt, of Bowling Green, Mo., Mrs. Charles Curtis, of Wilton, and Arthur S. Lawrence of this city. The deceased was a woman who always took a foremost part in works of charity and was prominently identified with the grand cause of temperance, while for many years she was a most devoted and consistent member of the M.E. church. The remains will be transported to the old home at Wilton and the last sad rites will be conducted at 10 o’clock Sunday morning at the home of Mrs. Curtis, daughter of the deceased, by Rev. Barnett, pastor of the M.E. church.
