A telegram was received in this city yesterday announcing the death of G.A. Garretson, which sad event occurred at 12:30 o’clock at his home in San Diego, California. For thirty years the deceased was not only one of the leading business men of Muscatine county, but in this section of the state. For a long time he was the head of the firm of G.A. Garretson & Co, wholesale grocers, Front street, but also of the firm of G.A. Garretson, bankers, corner Second and Iowa avenue.

The deceased was a native of Washington county, Pa., and came to Iowa and located in Muscatine, April 16, 1854. He engaged in the grocery trade and after continuing in the retail business a few years he embarked in the wholesale trade and continued in the jobbing business for about twenty years, doing and extensive trade. He engaged in the banking business about 1860 and continued in that for a score of years. He was also the senior member of Wells & Garrettson at Fairfield, Iowa. When he commenced life he had nothing, and achieved success by his own efforts.

He married Miss. Elizabeth A. Gray, a native of Greene county, Pa., in 1849 and to them were born six children who with their mother survives. Mr. G. left Muscatine a few years ago and of late had been residing at San Diego, Cal.
