DEATH OF PETER LEYSEN

Apr 4, 1896 (hand written)

The silent messenger of death claimed one of Muscatine’s old and highly respected citizens, Peter Leysen, who succumbed to the fatal inroads of pneumonia, at his home, No. 710 Pine street, this morning at 10:30 o’clock. Deceased had been in failing health for a year past, but had succeeded in keeping up under his affliction, until about one week since, when he was obliged to take to his bed, never to arise again.

Deceased was born in Luxemburg, Germany, August 3, 1828, where he spent his early life. He emigrated to this country in the early 50’s, coming directly to Muscatine, where he continued to reside until finally summoned hence. Besides his sorrowing widow, he is survived by six children, Jacob, Charles, John, Joseph, Mamie and Mrs. Edwards; also, five sisters and one brother, Mrs. Joseph Rank, of Moline; Mrs. Anton Kail, of Rock Island; Mrs. George Arnold, Mrs. John Knopp, Miss Mary Leysen and Charles Leysen, of this place.

The funeral has been appointed to take place from St. Matthias’ church, Monday morning, at 9 o’clock.
