DIED

ECKEL-At her home in Lake Benton, Minn., Tuesday, August 21, at 10 p.m., of paralysis, MRS. MARY H. ECKEL, wife of Oliver W. Eckel, in the 59th year of her age.

The above sad event was a sudden and severe stroke to the husband and other relative. Mrs. Eckel had been apparently in the best of health till an hour and a half before her death, when a stroke of paralysis in the head rendered her speechless and unconscious, in which condition she remained until her spirit took its flight.

The maiden name of the deceased was Mary H. Velle. She was born in Troy, N.Y., in 1835, and came to Iowa with her parents in 1837. Her father was William Velie, a prominent and highly respected citizen of this county during his life time. The family settled on a farm in Montpelier township, where they resided till 1860, when they removed to this city.

The deceased was married to Oliver W. Eckel, brother of Levi Eckel, of this city, in 1861, making 31 years of happy wedded life. Mr. O.W. Eckel had been a resident of Muscatine since 1856. In 1874 he and his wife removed from Muscatine. For the last fourteen years their home had been at Lake Benton. They have no children.

The remains of Mrs. Eckel was brought to Muscatine for interment in the family lot, arriving Friday morning, accompanied by the sorrowing husband and by Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Palmer, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Mrs. Palmer being a sister and the only surviving member of the family. The burial exercises took place in the City cemetery at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
