DEATH OF MRS. MEASON
May 6, 1894 (hand written)At noon Sunday the spirit of Mrs. Mary Meason deserted its mortal tenement and winged its flight to the great beyond. For a year the venerable woman had been confined to her bed and death brought a welcome relief to her protracted sufferings. The deceased was a native of Pennsylvania, first seeing the light of day near Brownsville, in Fayette county, Feb. 2, 1816, and consequently was in her 79th year at the time of her demise.
She grew to young womanhood in her natal place and in 1832 was united in marriage to Mr. George Meason. They came to Iowa and Muscatine in 1852 and here they made their permanent home. Mr. Meason had been honored with offices of trust and distinction in Fayette county, serving as treasurer, sheriff commissioner and associate, and in Muscatine was honored with the position of assessor of internal revenue and for eight consecutive years was elected to the mayoralty.
While her husband was thus honored Mrs. Meason sought no distinction, and being of domestic nature confined herself to the cares and duties of the household. Their union was blessed with seven children, one of whom, Mrs. Catherine Blackman, is now deceased. The surviving children are Mrs. S.E. Whicher, Mrs. B. Beach, Mrs. J.E. Coe, Mrs. Louisa Broomhall, of this city, Mrs. Fred Bridgman, of Kansas City, and Wm. Ewing Meason, of Saratoga, Wyoming. The deceased came of a long-lived family and had four brothers and four sisters, now deceased, nearly all of whom attained a ripe old age of between 80 and 90 years.
The funeral is appointed to occur this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the residence of Mrs. J.E. Coe on west Fourth street. The services will be conducted by Rev. S.H. Parvin, of the Presbyterian church, of which deceased was a member.
Those who will act as pall bearers are Benj. Lilly, Charles Bridgman, G.M. Titus, Jos. K. Miller, S. Sinnett, Jr., and Lewis Demorest.
