OBITUARY
1893 (hand written)

The late GEORGE W. MESSICK, who died Saturday morning, July 22d, at his home in Muscatine county, was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, October 6, 1817, and had therefore attained the age of 75 years, 9 months and 16 days. He was united in marriage with Miss Martha A. Dougherty, November 28, 1839, and came west to Iowa in 1841. He first settled in Louisa county, removing to Muscatine in 1846, where he engaged in the grocery business for nine years, and in 1856 returned to Louisa county to engage in farming. In 1863 he again removed to Muscatine county, purchasing 110 acres of land in Lake township, where he lived for some years.

The deceased enjoyed the esteem of many friends during his long residence in this county. At the time of his death he had charge of a large farm in Fruitland township. He is survived by his aged wife and seven children – three daughters and four sons. He had been a member of the Methodist church since 1842.

The funeral services were held at the First M. E. church in this city at 11:30 o’clock to-day. Sermon by Rev. J. F. Robertson, whose text was from Romans 8:18. the pall bearers were J. W. Rice, W. H. Simpson, A. G. Townsley, B. Beach, L. Eichelberger and H. F. Bodman.
