Death of an Old Resident

At her home No. 601 West Seventh street Wednesday evening occurred the death of the venerable Mrs. JOHN VAN DAM, one of the early and respected residents of Muscatine, in her 75th year. The deceased had not been enjoying good health for some time and while her demise was not unexpected, it was not thought her final summons would come so soon. She was a native of Holland where she grew to young womanhood and was happily married. In 1846 she emigrated to this country with her family, locating in Buffalo, N. Y., where they resided for a period of nine years. In 1855 they moved to Muscatine and here they had resided continuously ever since. Their union was blessed with five children, three sons and two daughters. The eldest son John, resides in California, Daniel in Kansas City, Mo., and Albert in Worthington, Minn., while the daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Smeenk and Miss Pauline live in this city.

Mrs. Van Dam was a sincere christian, a faithful spouse, an indulgent mother and kind neighbor. She was esteemed by her many acquaintances who will regret to learn of her demise and extend sympathy to the bereaved household. The funeral appointment will wait upon telegrams from the absent members of the family.
