THE RIVER CLOSED

The ice bridge was found spanning the great river this morning ---ceased moving some time during last night. This meets the Journal’s prediction that there would closing on the ice before Christmas last year the river closed December 19th , and we note on turning to the Journal issue of that date, that the ice stopped running at 10:40 a.m. and 29 persons had crossed between that time and the hour of the Journal going to press. With such bracing …..gather as to-day’s there ought to be good crossing by to-morrow for foot passenger.

The following is the adjustment of chronological eras most generally accepted, taking the year 1885, which commenced at 11 o’clock last night, as the latest date:

    Christian year, A.D. ….1885
    Roman year, A.U. C….2638
    Anno Muni, Jewish account ….5645
    Anno Muni, Alexandrian account ….7377
    Anno Muni, Constantinean account….7393
    Mohammedan era, A. H. ….1401
    Indian period ….6598
To get over the complexity caused by this confusion of chronological periods, Christians and Jews alike have adopted the creation of the world as set forth in the old testament history as the commencement of the universal era.
