New Gymnasium-Auditorium To Be Used; Teaching Staff Unchanged.Nichols – Schools for the year 1934-35 will open at Nichols Monday morning, Aug. 27.
Greater anticipation than usual awaits the opening date this year in that the new gymnasium-auditorium addition to the building will soon be ready for occupancy. This building, adjoining the school building on the north side, provides a large and in all respects adequate stage and a gymnasium floor for physical training and basketball activities with a playing floor for the latter sport of 68 feet from end line to end line and 42 feet between the side lines. This new feature of the school will permit a far more adequate handling of school activities than has been possible in the past, and add to the community life of the town as well.
Same Faculty to Serve. The same facility that served last year will be back at their usual posts including, Miss Genevieve Wheeler, Proll, Iowa, primary grades: Miss Mayme Foley Lett, Iowa, intermediate grades; Miss Harriette James, Iowa City, grammar grades: Miss Lorraine Balzer, Rock Valley, Iowa, English and music; Miss Ilo Adamson, Centerville, Iowa, principal and mathematics and G. G. Bellamy, superintendent.
The only marked change in the high school curriculum will find junior business training and commercial geography replacing agriculture and occupations for freshmen and sophomores. A minor change in the offering of typing to juniors as well as seniors to the extent that machines are available.
New Class Smaller. Enrollment is expected to be approximately the same as that of last year, although the freshman class is likely to be some smaller than usual due to a paucity of graduates from the 8th grades of the rural schools of this township. If all members return to school there will be 17 students in the senior class, which is the largest group ever to reach senior standing in this school.
School board and faculty welcome all students back to school and assure all of their willing cooperation in making this the best school year Nichols has ever had.
