By Phyllis Green HazenWilliam Green was born in Indiana in 1822. Mary Ann Ransome became his wife in 1842 in Peoria, Illinois. She was born in Kentucky in 1826.
Sometime in 1880, the family moved to Iowa and resided at 920 west Fifth street in Davenport, Iowa. In 1885 they moved to 1211 West Seventh street. Mr. Green worked for H. Bremer and Son as a cooper, having learned this trade in Indiana.
William Green died in Davenport at the age of seventy-five years, on 17 October 1897. Mary Ann died there 1 August 1905. Both William Green and Mary Ann Green are buried in the Montpelier, Iowa cemetery.
Nine children were born to them: Annie Green (Mrs. Daniel Demanrville); Jane Green (Mrs. John Donnely); John T. Green (never married); George Green (died in Lone Tree in August 1932, he was the father of John Ernest “Jack” Green, who married Vera Ella Smith, and their children were Esther Green, George Green, and twins, Ida Green and Laura Green); Nellie Green (Mrs. George Barnes); Sarah Green (Mrs. James McCollum); Hiram Harrison Green; Emma Green (first Mrs. William Arp, and second, Mrs. Harry Cook, she died in 1927 a few minutes after a car-taxicab collision in Davenport, Iowa, she is buried in Pine Hill cemetery in Davenport); Mary Jane “Molly” Green (Mrs. William Parrish, buried in Nichols cemetery).
