TOMFELD FAMILY

By Alice Tomfeld HillyerHenry Tomfeld was born in Hanover, Germany, and came to the United States with his parents at the age of three years. He married Jessie Longstreth in 1904.
The Tomfeld family moved to the Nichols community in 1923 and rented a farm. They lived on several different farms until 1933, when they moved to a home in Cranston, Iowa.
Mr. Tomfeld passed away in 1950. Several years later Mrs. Tomfeld moved to a home in Nichols. Due to health problems, she moved to the Hershey Home in Muscatine where she lived until her death in 1971.
Children of the couple were:
Harry Tomfeld married Margaret Yedlik in 1927. They had two sons, Robert Tomfeld and Kenneth Tomfeld. Harry died in 1978.
The twins, Edith Tomfeld and Edna Tomfeld, graduated from Columbus Junction High school, and both are retired school teachers.
Edith Tomfeld married Jesse Newton. On son, William “Bill” Newton, married Rose Krueger. They have four children, Debbie Newton, Diann Newton, Donna Newton and Tony Newton.
Edna Tomfeld married Lloyd Hummel. He was the son of Frank Hummel and Nettie Mapes Hummel. The Hummels were farmers in this community. Lloyd died in 1969; Edna lives in Nichols.
Everett Tomfeld married Mildred Anderson. They have one daughter, Carolyn Tomfeld, who is married and lives in Winfield, Kansas. Everett and Mildred live in Muscatine.
Harriet Tomfeld was born while the family lived in Michigan. She passed away at the age of twenty years.
Alice Tomfeld married Nelson Lester Hillyer. They have three sons, David Hillyer, Richard Hillyer and Thomas Hillyer. David married Dora Krueger; they have two children, Mark Hillyer and Melissa Hillyer. They live in New Jersey. Richard married Carla Harbit. Their children are Robert Harbit and Jennifer Harbit. They live in Nichols. Tom married Marla Duncan, and they live in Stanwood, Iowa. They have one daughter, Kalen Lee Hillyer.
Martha Tomfeld married Charles Hafner. They have one son, Stanley Hafner, who married Christine Youngstron. They have two sons, Heath Hafner and Matthew Hafner, and they all live in Davenport, Iowa.
Clifford Tomfeld married Nadine Bentzinger from Donnellson, Iowa. They have two sons, Dale Tomfeld and Craig Tomfeld, and one daughter, Sandra Tomfeld (deceased). They all live in the Donellson area.
Wayne Tomfeld, the youngest, married Dorothy Kemper. They live in Muscatine.
Three members of this large family still live in Nichols – Edith Newton, Edna Hummel and Alice Hillyer.
