TOM HAZEN

By Jacque HazenThomas Joseph Hazen was born in Iowa City. Tom went to grade school in Nichols and graduated from West Liberty High school. He attended Muscatine Community college for two years.
Tom grew up in Nichols. When he was a youngster, he had a paper route for the Muscatine Journal and mowed lawns. His first car was a black 1949 Ford.
Tom married Phyllis Eileen Green, daughter of the late Durward “Red” Green and Ethel Hillyer Green. Phyllis was born in Anchorage, Alaska. She moved to Nichols with her mother and two brothers in 1958, after her sister and father died. Tom and Phyllis were neighbors from then until they were married. Phyllis also went to grade school at Nichols and graduated from Lone Tree High school.
Tom and Phyllis lived in Muscatine for the first two years they were married; then they moved back to Nichols to Herb Schmitt’s farm, west of town. That house was moved recently [1984] east of Nichols when Herb built a new home on the farm. The house they lived in there is 118 years old now [1984]. Phyllis’ grandmother and step-grandfather, Nina Smith Green and Ed Dubisher, also lived in Herb’s house later for a few years.
Tom and Phyllis Hazen have two children: Dawn Marie Hazen and Casey Thomas Hazen, both born in Iowa City. Tom and his family bought a house in Nichols in 1974 at 212 Short street. Samuel Nichols was one of the first owners of the land.
Tom and his family belong to the Muscatine Miniature Aircraft association. Tom enjoys building and flying model airplanes and playing the guitar. He has built two guitars. Tom started serving on the Nichols Town council. Phyllis enjoys sewing quilts and bowling. Dawn likes music and takes ceramic classes. Casey also takes ceramic classes, is a Webelo Scout and is taking karate lessons. Both children have also gone to Nichols Elementary school.
