TOWNSEND BURT NICHOLS

         Townsend Burt Nichols was born 20 January 1874, the only child of Benjamin Franklin Nichols and Susan Maria Jenkins Nichols. He died 1 January 1942. He spent his entire life in the Nichols community. He attended the schools in Nichols and completed a course in an Iowa City business college. He managed the large estate of his uncle, Townsend Nichols, who lived in California, when he was still a young man. He specialized in raising and feeding stock, keeping horses, hogs and Aberdeen Angus cattle.
         He was president of the Nichols Board of Education for many years. He belonged to many organizations, including Stainless Lodge A. F. and A. M. of Nichols, Kaaba Shrine of Davenport, Nichols Chapter No. 479 of the Order of the Eastern Star, DeMolay Consistory of Clinton, and the Modern Woodmen of Nichols.
         He was married to Lutetia MeDora Sutton on 25 November 1897 at Nichols. They were parents of two children, Anna Letitia Nichols and Benjamin Franklin Nichols.
         Dora, as she was known, was born 1 March 1880 at Boone, Story county, Iowa, a daughter of George Washington Sutton and Letetia Ames Sutton. She was a member of the Nichols Christian church, Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine of Muscatine, Royal Neighbors of America and a 50-year member of the Rebekah lodge. She died 12 February 1958.
         Both T. B. and Dora were buried in the Nichols cemetery.
         George Washington Sutton was born in New York City 22 January 1838. He died at Nichols 30 September 1913. He was one of the ten children of John Anderson Sutton and Wealthy Valentine Sutton. He married Letitia Ann Ames on 25 November 1863 in Hancock county, Illinois. She was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, 2 June 1846, and died in Nichols 17 February 1906.
         Six children were born to George and Letitia: john William Sutton (1864-1888); Charles Holland Sutton (1866-1948); Annie Wealthy Sutton (1869-1935) married Thomas Marion Aylsworth; George Wesley Sutton (1875-1959); Henry Gifford Sutton (18876-1931) married Anna “Roney” Krueger, and Lutetia MeDora Sutton.
         Anna Letitia Nichols was born 28 November 1900 in Nichols. She graduated from the Nichols schools and received her B. A. degree from Northwestern university with a major in music. She was married 3 May 1930 in Muscatine to DeWayne Charles “Doc” Rosenfield. She was a member of the Nichols Christian church, Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine of Muscatine. She died 2 March 1977. They had no children.
         DeWayne Rosenfield was born 3 March 1909 in Muscatine, an adopted son of Sollie Rosenfield and Addie Rosenfield. He was married again on 22 July 1978 to Marjorie Smid in Lone Tree. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II. He had been employed by the Iowa State Liquor store in Iowa City. He was an elder of the Nichols Christian church and a member of the Masonic lodge of Lone Tree, the Kaaba Shrine of Davenport and the Muscatine Elks lodge. He died 2 November 1979.
         Both Anna and Doc Rosenfield are buried in the Nichols cemetery.
