ROBERT T. SHANNON FAMILY
Nichols, Iowa Centennial Book 1884-1984, pages 282-283
By Michael Appleby

Joseph Shannon and Jane Evitt Shannon immigrated from Ireland to small town in New York and started farming. Later they moved to a farm near Nichols. Here they raised their family of two sons and five daughters: Robert Shannon, Margaret Shannon, Richard Shannon, Anna Shannon, Lizzie Shannon, Rita Shannon and Mary Shannon.
Robert Thomas Shannon was born in 1849. He married Louisa Adams in 1883, and one son was born to them, Clinton Shannon. The mother died when the baby was born. In 1886 he married Caroline Hechtner and they had six children: Isa Shannon, married Albert Lindee; Fred Shannon, married Mona Stapp; Harry Shannon, married Amanda Rummells; Verda Shannon, married Clarence Metcalf; Lloyd Shannon, married Mildred Barnes. A son, Raymond Shannon, died in infancy.
Robert Shannon was a county supervisor and served many years; driving the sixteen miles to Muscatine with a horse and buggy. When the new court house was built, his name was engraved in the marble wall on one side. He bought the Hechtner farm, east of Nichols, when Caroline’s parents sold the farm, moved to Nichols and bought the meat market, which he operated several years. He then sold it and bought the grocery store. During these years, Robert built two lovely homes; he sold one and lived in the other the rest of his life.
Robert died in 1918, Caroline in 1934. Clinton died in 1925. The rest of the children have passed on, leaving only three widows, Mona Shannon, Amanda Shannon and Mildred Shannon [1984].
