         Robert Metcalf was born 20 November 1909 to George Metcalf and Estella Nelson Metcalf near Stamford, South Dakota. His parents homesteaded in South Dakota for five years, then they moved to a farm north of Nichols.
         Robert Metcalf and Florence Shafer of Muscatine were married in December 1931. They lived in Nichols for a short time, moved to Lone Tree for a year, and then to Muscatine, where they have lived since.
         Robert started school at the Siloam school north of Nichols. He also went to Lacey school, southeast of Nichols, and then to Nichols Public school. Florence attended Independence school in Cedar Valley, entered high school in Muscatine and graduated from there.
         Robert Metcalf drove a semi truck and hauled Kent feeds for 41 years, all over the state of Iowa and in Illinois and Missouri. Upon retiring, he drives pony hitches in parades and shows in many towns in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
         They have one daughter, Linda Metcalf, who married Michael J. Johnson. Linda is employed at the Muscatine county Court house, and Michael is employed at the Monsanto company, south of Muscatine.
