Marien Thomas Renshaw was born in Elisabeth, Illinois, 6 March 1853, the youngest child of Elisha Renshaw and Mary Cook Renshaw.
His parents were born in Kentucky, and they were married in November 1841 in Jo Daviess county, Illinois. They settled in the town of Mill Creek where Elisha was a miner and became parents of Mary E. Renshaw, Levi Renshaw, Alfred Renshaw, Elisha “Lash” Renshaw and Marien Thomas Renshaw. Family historians tell that the father, Elisha, just walked down the road one day when Marien was about three years old and never returned.
By the summer of 1860, Mary Renshaw had moved her family to Mt. Carroll, Illinois. The three older boys joined the Civil war; Alfred Renshaw was captured at Snickers Gap, Virginia.
Before the summer of 1870, Mary Cook Renshaw moved from Illinois to Nichols, Pike township, along with Marien and her daughter Mary E. Renshaw and her husband, Moses I. Adams, and their son Albert B. Adams. Mary E. Renshaw and Moses Adams had six children, but none of them lived to adulthood.
Levi Renshaw and Lash Renshaw spent little time in Iowa; however, Alfred Renshaw spent his later years in Nichols. Alfred married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Gross, twice, and they divorced twice. Their children were William Elisha Renshaw and Carrie Elizabeth Renshaw.
At Atalissa, Iowa, on 24 March 1875, Marien Thomas Renshaw married Rhoena Smith, daughter of John Smith and Catharine Davis Smith. John and Catharine were born in Ohio and moved to Pike township in 1849, later settling in Goshen township.
Marien Renshaw and Rhoena Smith Renshaw were the parents of ten children: Mary Virginia Renshaw, born 21 October 1875 in Nichols, married 3 March 1897 to Adolph Joseph Bausch, who was born 10 September 1864 in Hemsbach, Germany; Hattie B.
