By Alice HillyerNelson Lester Hillyer, son of James Henry Hillyer (1881-1964) and Edna Lorena Metcalf Hillyer (1885-1965), was born in Nichols in the house now [1984] owned by Gerry Hillyer and the late Robert H. Hillyer.
He was baptized in the Christian church at Nichols. He married Alice M. Tomfeld, daughter of Henry C. Tomfeld (1881-1950) and Jessie F. Longstreth Tomfeld (1884-1971). They are the parents of three sons.
Nelson is better known as Les or Lester. He graduated from Nichols High school, and worked for George Stych produce. He went to World War II, then he cut buttons for Lincoln Fridley and worked with his father as a carpenter. He then took a job with Iowa Highway Maintenance at Nichols, retiring after 29 years.
Alice has worked at the Nichols Post Office as a part time clerk. She also ran Newt’s Café for three years after the death of her brother-in-law, Jesse Newton.
The sons of Lester and Alice are David Hillyer, Richard Hillyer and Thomas Hillyer. David A. Hillyer married Dora Krueger. They have two children, Mark Hillyer and Melissa Hillyer, and they live in Ringwood, New Jersey, where he works for IBM.
Richard R. Hillyer married Carla J. Harbit. Their two children are Robert Hillyer and Jennifer Hillyer, and they live in Nichols. Richard works for Grain Processing Corporation in Muscatine; Carla works at the Farmers and Merchants Bank.
Thomas D. Hillyer married Marla S. Duncan. They have a daughter, Kalen Lee, and are now [1984] living at Stanwood, Iowa. He is district manager for Ralston Purina Company.
