MARGARET UMSCHEID GABLE

         Margaret Gable was born May 1896, the daughter of George Umscheid and Elizabeth Rausch Umscheid. She was married in 1921 to William Gable, a son of Frederick Gable and Amelia Hager Gable. She lived in and near Nichols until recent years, when she moved to the Simpson Home in West Liberty where she resides [1984].
         William Gable was a farmer. He was born in 1886 and died in 1959.
         Margaret had two brothers: Louis A. Umscheid was born 30 September 1894 and died in October 1948; Ernest M. Umscheid was born 19 June 1893, married Myrtle Mills, daughter of Scott Mills and Isabell Mills. All three children attended Adams school and Nichols High school.
         Elizabeth Rausch was a daughter of Adam Rausch and Elizabeth Becht Rausch. She was born 3 March 1871 in Rock Island county, Illinois; she died 12 March 1934 at Nichols.
         George Umscheid was born 4 December 1865 in Muscatine. He married Elizabeth Rausch 5 October 1892 in Muscatine county. He was a son of John Louis Umscheid and Katherine Knopp Umscheid, who were both born in Germany. They came to this county early in the 1850s. They were parents of eight children: Leo Umscheid, Margaret Umscheid, Katie Umscheid, George Umscheid, John Umscheid, Margaretha Umscheid, Leonard J. Umscheid and Mary Umscheid.
         Leo Umscheid lived in Oregon. Margaret Umscheid died at age 3 years. Katie Umscheid married Thomas J. Fowler 7 October 1884 in Muscatine county; they lived near Illinois City, Illinois.
         John Umscheid was born in 1868; married 18 February 1896 in Muscatine county to Emma Walker; they lived at Spirit Lake, Iowa. Margaretha Umscheid was born in 1870, married 24 June 1896 in Muscatine county to Paul Noll; they lived in Brooklyn, New York.
         Leonard J. Umscheid married 4 November 1896 in Muscatine county Anna M. Fackelday; they lived in Muscatine. Leonard started a book store that was purchased from him by an employee and took his name, Asthalter’s book store.
         Mary Umscheid was born in 1876. A talented dressmaker, she married John Foley on 6 September 1910. She died in 1913.
