LINDEE FAMILY
Nichols, Iowa Centennial Book 1884-1984, page 282
By Juanita Lindee Wadsworth

Gustav Lindee was born in Templin, Germany (the town is no longer in existence) on 4 October 1847, the son of John Linde and Amelia Knaack Linde, where he spent the first 24 years of his life. Then he came to America alone, without being able to speak English. He arrived in Chicago at the time of the fire of 1871, then went to Milwaukee and Racine, Wisconsin, where he worked in a machine shop for two years.
He went to Henry county, Iowa, as a farm hand, and then came to Muscatine county as a farm hand. He worked in a department store in Nichols, for more than twenty years, when he took up farming again.
Because people tended to call him “Lind,” he added another “e” to his name, spelling it Lindee.
Gustav Lindee married Louisa Hacke, daughter of Fred and Dora Mueller Hacke, in 1883. Four children were born to this union: Frederick Lindee, who died in infancy; Carl Lindee, who made his home in Chicago; Albert Lindee, who graduated from Nichols High school and became a railway mail clerk; and Mabel Lindee, who died at 9 months of age. Louisa died in 1895, and Gustav married Etta Quimby of Indiana two years later. There were no children from the second marriage.
Gustav purchased a farm in Pike township, where the family made their home on the 225 acres of land. He served as president of the Nichols School board and acted as mayor of the village of Nichols for one term. He ably served as a trustee of Pike township.
His second wife died in 1925, and Gustav then lived with his son, Albert Lindee, in Muscatine until his death in 1929.
Albert married Isa Mae Shannon of Nichols, and four daughters were born to them: Juanita Wadsworth, now living in Wayne, Pennsylvania; Alice Seeley, now living in Roanoke, Virginia; Harriet Stewart, now living in Des Moines, Iowa; and Jane Smith, now living in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
Carl Lindee married Vera Coleman. They lived in Chicago and had two children: Carl, Jr., who lived in Franklin, Pennsylvania and died in 1982; and Louise Burger, who lives in Tampa, Florida.
