HAROLD AND VIVIAN MADSEN

         Harold A. Madsen and Vivian M. Rogers were married in West Branch, Iowa on 10 March 1936. Harold’s parents were Neil P. Madsen and Agnes Madsen of West Branch. Vivian’s parents were Owen L. Rogers and Carrie Rogers of Iowa City.
         Harold and Vivian moved to a farm located two miles north and ¾ mile west of Nichols. The farm was owned by Mrs. Paul McCann of LaGrange, Illinois, at that time.
         In 1953 they bought 80 acres of land located approximately one mile west of their home.
         The Madsens were members of Bethany Lutheran church in West Branch until Our Redeemer Lutheran church was organized in West Liberty. They were charter members and were active in the organization and continuation of the congregation.
         Harold was active in the Masonic lodge in Nichols. Both Harold and Vivian were active in the Eastern Star in Nichols. Both served as officers in the organizations. They were active in and supportive of the school organizations and activities.
         In 1962 Harold’s health forced him to quit farming. On 25 September 1964 Harold and Vivian moved to Iowa City. In January of 1965 they held a farm sale. They were both employed by University hospitals in Iowa City until their retirement in 1976. In 1983 they are enjoying retirement in their Iowa City home.
         Marlys Ann Madsen was born to Harold and Vivian Madsen. She attended rural schools until third grade and the Nichols Public school from third grade through high school. She was graduated from Warburg college and entered the teaching profession.
         She was married to Donald H. Claussen at Our Redeemer Lutheran church in West Liberty. Don’s parents were Frank Schoon and Anna Schoon of Palmer, Iowa. Don graduated from Wartburg and is a social worker.
         Marlys and Don became parents of a daughter, Rebecca Ann Claussen, and a son, Mark Harold Claussen.
         The family moved to Marion, Iowa, where Don is a school social worker for the Grant Wood Area Education agency in Cedar Rapids. Marlys Ann is a school librarian in the North Linn Community schools of Coggon, Iowa. [1984]
