HAROLD KELLER FAMILY
Nichols, Iowa Centennial Book 1884-1984, page 279-280
By Dorathia Keller

Harold and Dorathia Keller live on the banks of Pike Run in their retirement home. They think the scenery there is beautiful any day of the year. They describe some of the interesting things they see and do there.
“On the quieter days, our yard is a gathering place for a variety of birds. We put out food and bird houses for them. Some of them leave in the fall but return in the spring. Now and then we see a deer. The squirrels bury nuts all over the yard for their winter food supply. They also have a great time teasing our Pomeranian.
“We will never forget the owls. One morning we looked out in the yard and saw a hoot owl. It didn’t offer to move around, so we went out to see if something was wrong. It had become entangled in some string and couldn’t go any further. Harold took his pocket knife and cut the string from its wing and feet. We fully expected it to fight for its freedom, but it was real timid. When we talked to it, it would just look at us and hoot as if to say that it understood that we were trying to help it out of a bad situation. It didn’t offer to leave until we went back into the house. You very seldom see them around, but they can be heard occasionally at night answering each other in the trees.
