By Phyllis Green Hazen

Hiram Green, son of William and Mary Ann Green, was born in Putnam county, Illinois, 18 September 1859. He was married on 23 December 1879 to Myra Zenora Reed. Nora, as she was known to family and friends, was born 9 March 1859 in Peoria, Illinois.
Nora’s parents were Rufus Reed (born in New York) and Lucy Coon Reed (born in Illinois). The marriage was performed in Ottumwa, Iowa. Nora Green died in Davenport, Iowa, on 17 May 1896 at the age of thirty-seven years. She had been ill for about eight months with chronic anemia. A fourteen-year-old son, Franklin Earl Green, died 27 January 1895, just sixteen months before her death. Both Franklin Earl Green and Nora Green are buried in Pine Hill cemetery in West Davenport, Iowa. The family was living in Fishertown (West Davenport) at that time.
Seven children were born to Hiram and Nora Green: Franklin Earl Green (born 13 September 1880, died 5 January 1895); Gracie Pearl Green (Mrs. Theodore Neff), born 17 January 1883; Ida Lillian Green (Mrs. Harry Felton), born 8 February 1886; Edna Estella (Mrs. Frank Elder), born 1 May 1889; Harvey Leroy (married Susie Swickard), born 13 March 1891; Frederick Thomas (married Nina E. Smith), born 21 July 1893; and Earl Harrison (married Susie Swickard Green), born 17 May 1896.
Hiram Green pursued his early studies in the public schools and continued at home until he was 21 years old, when he began working at the cooper’s trade, which he continued for twenty years. In 1899 he became identified with farming interests in Muscatine county, then he was in charge of a farm near Nichols. He was also connected with a general store.
Hiram Green and his family were associated with the Methodist Episcopal church. Politically, Mr. Green was a supporter of the Republican party, and fraternally he was affiliated with the Knights of Labor of Davenport, Iowa.
