         Henry Kirchner was born 13 April 1871 in rural Nichols, died 24 February 1948. He was married 4 September 1895 to Emma Margaret Hacke, who was born 21 February 1876 in Muscatine county, died 1 April 1961 in Iowa City. Both are buried in Nichols cemetery.
         Henry remained at home until he was 23 years old, when he became associated with his brother Bernard Kirchner in the store at Nichols which their father had established. In 1907 he operated the store in his own name. He was a member of the German Lutheran church and an active member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges. He also operated a funeral home.
         Emma Hacke as a daughter of Frederick Hacke and Dora Mueller Hacke. Her parents came to this country from Germany. Her father farmed in Iowa. The Hacke children were Louise Hacke, William Hacke, Matilda Hacke, Mary Hacke and Emma Hacke. Emma was a member of the Nichols Christian church.
         Henry and Emma Kirchner were parents of four children: Alvina Kirchner, Elsie Kirchner, Floyd Kirchner, and Marguerite Kirchner.
         Alvina Gertrude Dorothy Kirchner was born 9 January 1897 in Nichols. She was a graduate of Iowa Teachers college and The University of Iowa. She taught school for 45 years, until she retired. She lives in a nursing home in Muscatine [1984].
         Elsie Pearl Kirchner was born 10 June 1899. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers’ college and Drake University. She taught in the Iowa City school system for many years. Elsie’s mother, Emma, lived with her until she died in 1961, when Elsie moved to Tucson, Arizona. She returned to Iowa City, where she lived until her death, 6 May 1981. She is buried in the Nichols cemetery.
         Marguerite Fern Kirchner was born 28 June 1908. She married in 1943 to Edward H. Grimm. Marguerite also taught school in Preston, Iowa, and in the Muscatine school system. They have two daughters.
