THE GAYLORD VINER FAMILY

By Christine Metcalf VinerChristine Metcalf was born 5 September 1912 to George Metcalf and Estella Nelson Metcalf, north of Nichols. Her parents had homesteaded in South Dakota, near Stanford, for five years before they moved to Nichols with their first born, Robert Metcalf. Christine Metcalf was their second child, and Pearl Metcalf was third.
Christine Metcalf started and graduated from Nichols Public school.
Christine Metcalf and Gaylord Viner of Letts, Iowa, were married 1 December 1934. They lived and worked on several farms in the Letts area for ten years. Gaylord attended schools in Letts and Fredonia, Iowa.
While they were living at Letts, two sons and a daughter were born to them: Deane Viner, Robert “Bob” Viner and Kae Lynn Viner, who was born 27 September 1938, died in February 1939.
Gaylord and Christine and the boys moved north of Nichols and farmed the Clarence Metcalf farm; then moved to the N. G. Schmitt farm on the Muscatine-Johnson county line. This farm was formerly the Henry Brugman farm. They lived on the farm until they retired and moved into Nichols. Gaylord drives ponies in parades and shows in eastern Iowa and mows the Nichols park.
Deane Viner married Jane Crawford of Lone Tree. Deane started to school in Letts. He went there until his parents moved to Nichols and he finished his schooling in Nichols Public school. He was in the Army Reserve for seven years. Deane and Jane have lived and farmed on the farm that had been Jane’s grandfather’s farm, south of West Liberty in the South Prairie community. Jane received her education in the Lone Tree schools and attended Cornell college in Mount Vernon, Iowa, receiving her teacher’s certificate. She taught school in the West Liberty school district before they married. They have three children: June Viner, Jeannine Viner and James “Jim” Viner.
June Viner was born to Deane Viner and Jane Crawford Viner. She started and graduated from the West Liberty schools. Following graduation she went to Copenhagen, Denmark, as an exchange student for one year. After she returned home, she enrolled and graduated from Columbia college at Columbia, Missouri. She now has her own business in fashion and dress designing called The Perfect Fit in Columbia.
Jeannine was born to Deane Viner and Jane Viner. She graduated from the West Liberty schools. Following graduation she went to Orizaba, Mexico, as an exchange student for one year. After her return, she entered Central college at Pella, Iowa, then returning to Mexico for additional schooling.
James “Jim” Viner was born to Deane Viner and Jane Viner. He attended the West Liberty schools. One summer he went to Tokyo, Japan, on the 4-H exchange program. He was there five weeks, living with the boy who had lived with Jane and Deane the summer before.
Robert “Bob” Viner, son of Christine Viner and Gaylord Viner, married Judy Kelly of Muscatine. Bob went to the Letts, Iowa schools for three years, finishing his education in Nichols Public school when his parents moved to Nichols. He was in the Army Reserve for seven years. They farmed north of Lone Tree and now live in the South Prairie community on the farm known as the Tillie Brugman place. They bought this place a few years ago.
Judy Kelly Viner received her education in the St. Mathias school and graduated from Hayes High school in Muscatine. She worked at Neitzel’s Drug store in Muscatine before they were married. They have three children: Andy Viner, Jeff Viner and Krista Viner.
Andy Viner was born to Robert Viner and Judy Viner. He graduated from the Lone Tree school. He has worked at Stutsman, Inc. of Hills, Iowa, since graduation. He married Kelly Yakish of Lone Tree. They have a daughter, Stephanie Viner, and live in Lone Tree.
Jeff Viner was born to Robert Viner and Judy Viner. He graduated from the Lone Tree school. He has worked at Stutsman’s of Hills, Iowa, since graduating. He lives in Lone Tree.
Krista Viner was born to Robert Viner and Judy Viner. She graduated from the Lone Tree schools. After graduation, she attended Kirkwood college at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is now [1984] employed at Hills Bank in Iowa City as a teller.
