Nichols, Iowa Centennial Book 1884-1984, page 246
By Phyllis Green Hazen

Fred Green was born 21 July 1893 in Davenport, Iowa. On 2 August 1913 he married Nina Elizabeth Smith in Muscatine. Nina was born 4 March 1895 at Nichols, the daughter of Henry Smith and Ida Wiker Smith. Fred was a farmer and day laborer, living most of his married life in Muscatine county. When Fred and Nina were first married, they lived with his father, Hiram, south of Nichols and close to his sister, Grace, who lived by the Pike school.
In 1940 Fred and Nina moved to Peru, Illinois. While living here during World War Ii, he worked in defense plants until his health failed. Then they moved to Nichols and lived with their daughter, Jerry, and her husband, Bob Hillyer. Fred died 24 June 1947 in Nichols and is buried in the West Liberty cemetery.
Five children were born to Fred and Nina Green: Durward Merton “Red” Green, Doris L. Green, Ula Berniece Green, Wayne LeMoyne Green and Geraldine “Jerry” Lucille Green.
Around 1830 Fred and all five of his children had smallpox. Nina didn’t get it because she had been vaccinated when she was about thirteen years old. Nina’s brother, Guy Smith, came to help her do chores, etc. They were quarantined at least three months. Nina had to boil money to give to the grocery boy when he delivered the groceries.
Nina said they had some awful winters when their children were young. She made all their clothing and bedding, and they raised their own chickens and ducks. Nina is eighty-eight now [1984], and she still pieces some quilt tops and ties them.
Nina remarried Edward Dubisher. They lived in Iowa City and she worked in nursing homes. In 1977 they moved to Herb Schmitt’s farm east of Nichols. In 1981 they moved to Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, where she is still living. Ed died on 6 March 1983.
