By Frances ElderEarl Ray Elder was born 5 August 1885 on the farm south of Nichols, the son of John Elder and Clara Shellabarger Elder. He died 9 November 1973.
Earl Elder married Effie Gifford on 23 March 1910 in St. Ansgar, Iowa.
Effie Gifford Elder was born 11 November 1889 and died 5 August 1966 at Muscatine. In early years they farmed south of Nichols. In 1945 they moved to Muscatine, where they made their home with their daughter.
Earl Elder was a graduate of the Iowa School for the Deaf and a school for the deaf in Washington, D. C. He was a member of the Fraternal Organization of the Deaf. He was an honorary member of the Muscatine Bowling Association and the Muscatine Horseshoe club. He was a member of the Methodist church.
Children of Earl and Effie Elder were Hubert Elder, Waldo Elder, Pershing Elder and Elaine Elder.
Hubert Duane Elder, son of Earl and Effie Elder, was born 14 October 1912. He lives in West Liberty [1984].
Waldo Melvin Elder, son of Earl and Effie Elder, was born 29 September 1914. He was married to Ruth Arlene Derby on 8 June 1940 at Anita, Iowa by Rev. Arthur Long. Ruth was born 24 October 1920. They were parents of five children: Gary Elder, Christa Elder, Judy Elder, Jack Elder and Barbara Elder.
Gary Lee Elder was born 10 August 1941 and died at birth.
Christa Elder, daughter of Waldo and Ruth Elder, married Bruce Boyd Gruemmer. They live in Madison, Indiana. They have four children.
Judy Raye Elder, daughter of Waldo and Ruth Elder, married William H. Boorne. They live in Perry, Iowa, with their three children.
Jack Allen Elder, son of Waldo and Ruth Elder, married Rebecca Rene Westerguard. They live in La Crescent, Minnesota. They have three children.
Barbara Jo Elder, daughter of Waldo and Ruth Elder, married Stephen Patrick Dinnen. They live in Guthrie, Oklahoma. They have one daughter.
Pershing Victor Elder, son of Earl and Effie Elder, was born 21 November 1918. He was married on 14 January 1946 to Evelyn June McCaffery, who was born 26 January 1924. They are parents of three daughters.
Elaine Ann Elder, daughter of Earl and Effie Elder, was married to Harry Hindahl, Jr. They have two children.
