By Jacque HazenCleveland Hazen was born 11 May 1893, died 16 October 1979. He was known as Cleve. He was married on 23 February 1914 to Julia “Julie” Zybarth, daughter of Joseph E. Zybarth and Josephine Harper Zybarth. Julie’s father, Joe Harper, did not like Cleve, so on their wedding day, Cleve asked the sheriff to escort him to the Zybarth home to pick up Julie. Cleve was afraid Joe might start shooting, but all went well and they were married.
Cleve and Julie Hazen had eight children. Loretta Hazen Christofferson Hahn, Alberta Hazen Valett, Raymond Hazen, Albert Joseph Hazen, Betty Hazen Ament, Wayne Hazen, Donald Hazen, born 7 May 1932, died January 1935 of pneumonia, and James Hazen, died shortly after birth.
Cleve and Julie were also farmers and owned eighty acres of land before the depression. The price of corn was so low during the depression that they burned it for fuel to heat the house.
