Nichols, Iowa Centennial Book 1884-1984, page 252
By Jacque Hazen

Charles Albert Hazen went to school at Nichols through the eighth grade, and his high school years were spent at West Liberty. Charlie’s first job was delivering the Des Moines Register with his brother, Denny. He started at age 12 and held that job for three years. Other odd jobs were making hay and cutting grass at the Catholic cemetery, also with his brother, Denny. For that they shared $50 a month. Later, Charlie has worked for Procter and Gamble in Iowa City.
Charlie married Sally Anne Mills, also a life-long resident of Nichols. Sally’s parents are Kent Mills and Garnet Mills. She has two brothers, Kirk Mills and Kim Mills. Her sister, Lisa, died in a car accident at age 16.
Sally attended Nichols school through the sixth grade and graduated from West Liberty High school. Sally started babysitting Forrest Johnston and Julie Johnston’s children when she was twelve years old and has been sitting with people’s kids ever since.
Sally and Charlie Hazen have a daughter, Sara Lee Hazen. Sally enjoys astronomy, homeopathy and all of nature. Charlie likes to play guitar and sing songs to Sally.
