Ben Swickard built the house where the Goddards now live. He was the owner of the local lumber yard. The time was 1902. Many of the homes built at that time had a Victorian aspect. Ben’s grandparents were John Swickard and Margaret Nichols Swickard.
Ben met Jessie Walcott of Davenport when she came to teach at Nichols. She was niece-in-law of Scott Baker, the banker. She loved children and started many of them to read.
Many of you may remember their sleigh and their first car. In their wills, they left money for a band shell, now in the first park, and a library, which never came to pass.
