By Laura Albrecht Davis

Harold E. Albrecht and Marie Wedekind Albrecht are lifelong residents of Muscatine county. After Harold’s discharge from the Army Air Corps following World War II, they lived on a farm owned by Nannie O’Brien at Letts until her death. A recommendation from Miss O’Brien’s brother-in-law, John Foley of Nichols, resulted in their renting the rural Nichols farm owned by Tom Dean. They moved to the Nichols are on 1 February 1952. They later rented a farm owned by Ben Nichols, where they lived until they built their retirement home in Nichols.
Marie Pauline Wedekind, the daughter of Edwin W. Wedekind and Lulu Dippel Wedekind, was born near Muscatine. All her great-grandparents were natives of Germany, immigrating to the United States between 1851 and 1883. Marie is a graduate of Muscatine High school. In 1977 she retired from her position as cashier at the Veterans Administration hospital in Iowa City.
Harold Edward Albrecht was also born in rural Muscatine county and was educated in the county school system. His parents were Henry A. Albrecht and Katherine Eckhardt Albrecht. His great grandparents, Levi and Elizabeth Cross, came to Muscatine county from Ohio in a covered wagon in 1846, settling near the Cedar River in Lake township. His maternal grandparents and paternal great-grandparents were natives of Germany. Harold served in the United States Army Air Corps for 42 months during World War II, stationed in Washington, D.C., Italy and Trinidad. He was a lifelong farmer until his retirement in 1977.
Harold and Marie are the parents of three children. Laura, a registered nurse, is married to Major (Dr.) Brian M. Davis and resides in San Antonio, Texas. Lois, a vocational counselor with C. E. T. A., lives in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Dennis, a Nichols resident, is employed by Terra International. He is married to the former Linda Campbell and they have two daughters, Michelle Lynn and Leslie Jodell “Jodi.”
Both Harold and Marie have been involved with community activities in Nichols. They are members of the Nichols United Methodist church, where Harold has served both as a trustee and a member of the church board. Marie is active in the United Methodist women and has taught Sunday school classes and Vacation Bible school. She was a leader of the Pike Peppy Pals 4-H club for three years. Both Harold and Marie have served as judges for Nichols Day parades.
