J. Elmer Yeater Funeral Rites Set For Friday----The funeral rites for J. Elmer Yeater, 63, who was fatally injuried in a fall at the service station which he operated at 709 Grandview avenue, Tuesday, will be held Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home where the body is remaining. Services will be in charge of Dr. Claude W. Cooper of the First Methodist church with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Yeater died at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bellevue hospital without regaining consciousness. City and county officials who investigated after Mr. Yeater was found unconscious on the floor of his station, late Tuesday morning, said he apparently had fallen from a car which he was washing, striking his head on the cement floor. A basal skull fracture caused death. Mr. Yeater, who made his home at the European hotel, was born in Muscatine July 23, 1888, the son of John W. and Viola Leslie Yeater. He spent his entire life here with the exception of 15 years when he resided in Indiana. He married Isabelle Charles on Aug. 12, 1912, in Indiana. He was a member of the Musserville church and of Muscatine lodge No. 304, B. P. O. Elks. Mr. Yeater served in the United States Army on the Mexican border. Surviving are one son, John K. Yeater of Lafayette, Ind., two sisters, Mrs. Bert I. Girls of Muscatine and Mrs. William Gockley of Wenatchee, Wash., two half-brothers, Roy of Muscatine and Orville Yeater of Davenport; a half-sister, Mrs. Leonard Bower of Muscatine and one grandchild, James K. M. Wittich Funeral home Friday. Dr. Claude W. Cooper, pastor of the First Methodist church, was in charge, with Mrs. George Holliday serving as organist for the rites. The flower attendants were Mrs. Bert Leslie and Mrs. Guy Fuller. Casketbearers were Clair Law, Roy Lewis, Fred Coyner, John Watkins, John Hall and Henry Stickrod. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.

Charles Yerington, 58, 113 E. 8th St., died suddenly Sunday at his home. Services are Wednesday at the Riley Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Gannon will officiate. Pallbearers are Kevin Yerington, Brian Yerington, Jim Yerington, John Yerington, Dick Yerington and Dave Brockert. Burial will be in the Rock Island Arsenal Cemetery. Mr. Yerington was born June 26, 1928 in Muscatine, a son of Charles W. and Gertrude Everett Yerington. He was a lifelong resident. He married Dulcia Miller on Aug. 15, 1949 in Muscatine. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had retired from empolyment at the Rock Island Arsenal. Survivors include his wife; his mother of Muscatine; four brothers, Donald Yerington, John Yerington, Leo Yerington, and James Yerington, all of Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Keith (Kathleen) Brockert and Gertrude Yerington, both of Muscatine. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at St. Mathias Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Yerington was born April 24, 1901, in Rochester, the son of Daniel and Nina Osborn Yerington. He married Gertrude Everett Feb. 4, 1921, in Tipton. He was a resident of Muscatine most of his life. He was the construction superintendent for the Muscatine County Highway Dept. prior to his retirement 20 years ago. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Donald, John, Charles, Leo and James all of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Kathleen) Brockert of Muscatine, and Gertrude, at home; 35 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Kate) Morton of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Lloyd (Ruth) White of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Merle (Nira) Sterner, Wilton. Donald F. Yerington, 71, of 106 E. 6th St., died Tuesday, May 24, 1994, at the Moline Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Moline, Ill., following an extended illness. Donald Francis Yerington was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Muscatine to Charles and Gertrude Everett Yerington. He was a lifelong Muscatine resident. He married Donna Martin in 1953 in Muscatine. He was a heavy equipment operator and later was a Correctional Counselor, retiring in 1984. Donald was a decorated veteran of World War II serving with the US Navy. She loved playing cards, cooking and watching birds. The daughter of Thomas and Laura Pond Hiestand, she was born June 21, 1884, in Ogle county, Illinois. She lived in that state before coming here. She was a member of First Methodist church. Guy "Hoppy" Yerington----- MUSCATINE, Iowa - Guy "Hoppy" Webster Yerington, 84, Muscatine, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Services are Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Dan Robbs will officiate. Pallbearers are Floyd Nott, Eric Yerington, Wesley Vance, Randy Kaul and Ronnie. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Yerington was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Conesville, the son of Earl and Maggie Dunham Yerington. He married Ruth C. Howard April 18, 1959, in Cedar Rapids. He worked for Frank Foundry in Davenport, Carver Foundry, the Black Hawk Foundry along with various other foundries for 25 years. He also worked at various service stations for 13 years. He retired from the HON Company after 17 years of employment. He was a life long resident of Muscatine and a member of the Sycamore Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Carl Yerington and wife Debbie of Letts; two daughters, Judy Kaul and husband Norbert of St. Louis, Mo. and Barbara Schultz and husband Richard of New Boston, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Darla Herlein and husband Harry of Muscatine; a stepson, David L. Mr. Yerington was a member of Walnut Park Baptist church. He served in the U.S. Air Force for three and one-half years. He worked for the Muscatine Street Department for 31 years. Services will be Wednesday, at St. Mathias Catholic Church, 215 W. Eighth St., with the Rev. Geroge Hoeing officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Yerington, John Yerington, Mike Harris, Don Clark III, Joe Yerington, and Nathan Kazenske. Burial, with military rites by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Yerington was born on July 25, 1925, in Muscatine County, the son of Charles W. and Gertrude Everett Yerington. He was a lifelong resident of Muscatine. He married Arlene Worley on Sept 7, 1948. She died in 1979. He later married Marie Symmonds on Aug. 8, 1980. He was a member of the church, the Loyal Order of the Moose, and a member of the Tri-Cities Cement Masons Local 544 in Rock Island, Ill., for many years. He worked as a cement mason for more than 39 years, and was employed by C.H. Langman and Son, and for Langman Construction, retiring in 1988. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy. He loved his family and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Marie, three sons, Jeremy Yerington of Wendover, Utah, and Adam Yerington and Mark Yerington, both at home, his mother, Gertrude Yerington of Muscatine, two brothers, Leo and James Yerington both of Muscatine, and two sisters, Mrs. Keith (Kathleen) Brockert and Gertrude Yerington, both of Muscatine. Pamela Jo Yerington, 17, died at 12:40 a.m. today at University Hospitals, Iowa City, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday at St.Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A daughter of James W. and Judy Schildberg Yerington, she was born Feb. 23, 1960, in Muscatine, and was a life resident here. She attended Muscatine High School and would have graduated with the 1978 class. Surviving are her parents; two brothers, James and John, both at home; two sisters, Kathy and Debbie, both at home; paternal grandmother Mrs. Charles (Gertrude) Yerington, Muscatine; and Maternal grandmother, Mrs. Harley (Irene) Schildberg, Muscatine. WEST LIBERTY - Robert A. Yerington, 67, died Thursday afternoon at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following an extended illness. Services will be held Saturday at the United Methodist Church, West Liberty. Rev. Dick Watkins will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery under the the direction of the Snider Funeral Home, West Liberty. Robert Yerington was born April 29, 1910, in Tipton, the son of George W. and Hazel Duncan Yerington. On July 21, 1931 he married Vada Stewart in Rochester, Iowa. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion. Yerington had worked for many years as a contractor and carpenter. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert F. of Muscatine, Kenneth A. of Coralville and William K. of West Liberty; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Louise) Deahr of West Liberty and Mrs. Francis (Linda) Palmer of Muscatine; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel of Knoxville, Iowa, and Marvin of Iowa City; and three sisters, Mrs. Carroll (Margaret) Frankhauser of West Liberty, Mrs, Henry (Betty) Britcher of Davenport and Mrs. Ruth Livesy of Columbus, Ga. WEST LIBERTY - Vada Yerington, 78, died Monday at the Iowa City Care Center, following an etended illness. She was born July 18, 1914 in southern Illinois, the daughter of Samuel and Rosa Allen Stewart. On July 21, 1931 she was married to Robert A. Yerington at Wilton, Iowa. Services will be Wednesday at the West Liberty Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Thompson officiating. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimers Out Reach Program at the University of Iowa. Pallbearers are Don Yerington, Dick Yerington, Roy Yerington, Scott Yerington, Mike Deahr, and Brian Palmer. Burial will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery. She was a member of the United Methodist church and past president of the United Methodist Women. She was also active in the Swinging Seniors Musical Group of the Senior citizens, a leader in the Girl and Cub Scouts program as well as the farm 4-H program and the American Legion Auxilliary. Mrs. Yerington is survived by two daughters, Louise Deahr of Madison, Wis.; Linda Palmer of Muscatine; two sons, Kenneth of Coralville and Bob of Muscatine; one brother, Herman Stewart of Atalissa; 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. JESSE YORK, 85, DEATH OCCURS AT RESIDENCE HERE----Jesse J. York, 85, a resident of Muscatine and Louisa counties almost his entire life, died at 11:50 a.m. Sunday at his home, 1117 East Eighth street, following an illness since last Thursday. He had been in failing health, however, for some time. Mr. York was born in Illinois on Feb. 3, 1863. He married Addie Graham on Aug. 24, 1883 in Louisa county and they had farmed in this area until coming to Muscatine when Mr. York became an employee of the Roach and Musser Co. Surviving are a son, William, Muscatine; one brother, Z. A. York, Hoquiah, Wash.; three grandchildren, Clair York and Mrs. Ernest Marsh, Muscatine, and Mrs. Robert Salyers, Joy, Ill. His wife, parents, four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The body is at the Riley Funeral home where it will remain for services to be conducted Wednesday by the Rev. Guy Hunting, pastor of the First Friends church. Interment will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

MRS. JO DIANA YORK KILLED----CITY HAS 4TH CAR FATALITY----Death of a Muscatine woman in a two-car accident here Sunday has boosted the city's 1969 traffic death toll to four and the county toll to 17. Jo Diana York, 27, of 512 Lake Park Blvd., died Sunday evening at Muscatine General Hospital as the result of injuries suffered in the accident at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Lake Park Blvd. and Highway 61. The police report said a 1961 Ford driven by Mrs. York was traveling east on Lake Park Blvd., when it halted at a stop sign and then, according to witnesses, pulled across Park Ave. The accident site is just inside the city limits at the northeast edge of Muscatine. It was struck in the left rear section by a 1968 Dodge that police say was driven by Larry Dean Grenko; 19, of 1100 1/2 Isett Ave. He was treated at Muscatine General Hospital for injuries and then released. Escaping without apparent injuries were three young passengers in the Grenko car. They were identified as June Gotaas, Betsy Riley, Tom Riley and Tom Young, all of Muscatine. Services for Mrs. York will be held Thursday at the Keating-McKasson funeral home at Creston, Ia. The body will be at the Riley Funeral Home, Muscatine, today and Tuesday and then taken to the Creston Funeral Home on Wednesday. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Creston. Mrs. York had been a resident of Muscatine for three years, and was employed at the H. J. Heinz Co. She was born Oct. 17, 1942, at Creston, the daughter of Lyle and Mary Gwinner Case. She is survived by two daughters, Lisa, 8, and Amy, 6; three brothers, Vern Case, Kansas City, Mo., James L. Case, 840 Newell Ave., Muscatine, and Warren Case, Creston; four sisters, Mrs. Phillip (Patricia) Griswold, Laurens; Mrs. Dwight (Charlotte) Micky, Creston; Mrs. John (Carolyn) Clark, Des Moines; and Miss Barbara Case, Orient, Ia. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Lyle Case, Orient; a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Stella B. Case, Creston; and a paternal step-grandmother, Mrs. Lena Case, Creston. She was preceded in death by her father, one sister, and paternal grandparents.

MUSCATINE PILOT---1st Lt. LANNY A YORK DIES OF BURNS FROM CRASH-----First Lieutenant Lanny A. York, 24, Muscatine, died Saturday at the U.S. Army Medical Center on Okinawa. He had been hospitalized since Aug. 25 when he was severely burned in the crash of a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft in Thailand. Lt. York's body will be flown to Muscatine for services at a date to be announced later. The Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel is in charge of arrangements. It is planned that services will be held at Mulford Free Evangelical church, Rev. J. Paul Stevens, pastor of Otterbein United Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery. Lanny A. York was born June 2, 1948, in Muscatine, the son of Clair E. and Mary Brown York. He was married to Connie Peterson, May 30, 1970, in Muscatine. Lt. York was a member of Mulford Free Evangelical church. He had been in the Airforce for 26 months and had been in Thailand since last September. Flying a QU-22 single engine high altitude reconnaissance plane from Thailand. Lt. York had piloted more than 100 missions over South Vietnam and North Vietnam. He had over 500 combat hours in the air. Lt. York's plane crashed Aug. 25 when a power loss occurred on take-off from the Nakhon Phanom airbase. He received second and third degree burns on 45 per cent of his body, including his legs, arms, hands and face. The most severe burns were on his hands. He had always been interested in aviation. Lt. York had flown since he was 16 years old and received his private pilot's license shortly before his 18th birthday when he was a Muscatine High school senior. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Connie York, Muscatine, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clair E. York, Muscatine; a brother, Randy, who is a student at Iowa State University; and his maternal grandfather, Clement Brown, Muscatine.

RUTH YORK----Ruth E. York, 79, 1106 Lincoln Blvd., died Friday at Muscatine Care Center. Services will be held Monday at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel. Rev. A. A. Buntenbach will officiate. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Ruth York was born Jan. 15, 1900, in Mercer, Mo., the daughter of Aaron and Nettie Cotchell McIntosh. Her first marriage was to Francis Mike Ragan. She later married Louis York on Dec. 16, 1952. She was a member of the Women of the Moose. Survivors include her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Mucha of Austin, Texas, and Mrs. Robert (Ruby) Janes and Mrs. Ross (Frances) McGlothlen, both of Muscatine; one step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Glenna) Anderson of Sun Lake, Ariz.; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and one brother, Paul McIntosh of Marshalltown, Iowa. One son and a brother preceded her in death.

OCTOGENARIAN SUCCUMBS HERE----MRS. SUSAN YARK (YORK), 81, DIES EARLY TODAY.-----HEART DISEASE ASSIGNED AS CAUSE OF DEATH OF AGED WOMAN---MAY BE BURIED TOMORROW.-----Mrs. Susan Yark (York), 81 years old, succumbed to a lingering illness at the county home at five o'clock this morning. She became seriously ill yesterday and her condition gradually lowered until death occurred. Heart trouble is assigned as the cause of her demise. The deceased was born in Illinois. She had been at the county home since 1911. She leaves one son, George Sellers of Toolsboro, Iowa. While definite funeral arrangements have not yet been perfected, it is probable that the remains will be interred tomorrow. Mr. Sellers is expected to arrive today and outline funeral plans.

York. Mrs. York is survived by one son, Clair E. York, Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Salyers, Watago, Ill., and Mrs. Paul (Marie) Fowler, Muscatine, and two grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Harry Bogart, Tremont, Miss., and Cecil Bogart, Aledo, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 20, 1967 and also by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Mr. York was preceded in death by his parents. The body is at the Riley Funeral Home. Services will be conducted Monday at the funeral home, with Rev. J. Paul Stevens in charge. Nichols, June 13, 1883.--Elijah Younkin died on Monday at 11 o'clock and was buried on Tuesday at 2 o'clock. There was a large funeral, 46 buggies and wagons. Mr. Younkin was an old settler and a highly respected citize, and has many friends who mourn his departure from earth. His disease was primarily asthma followed by dropsy. His suffering was severe but he was supported by an unshaken faith in God, being a member in good standing of the Christian church. Rev. J. N. Smith, of West Liberty, preached the funeral sermon.Editors' note: This obituary is from a regular news column, the one below is the actual obituary.

Died at his home in Pike township, of pulmonary emphysema of the lungs, Elijah Younkin, Esq., aged 67 years. He was born in Somerset county, Pa., and was twice married, leaving a wife and two children to mourn his loss. He removed from Pennsylvania to Muscatine county in 1845 and settled in Pike township, residing there unti the time of his death. His long life in this county, being among the first settlers and holding some positions of public trust, made him widely known through out the community. Deceased had been a great sufferer for many years and especially during the past winter and spring when his disease became complicated with dropsy..... He was a member of the Christian church and was largely instrumental in building the brick church at Nichols, working with both heart and hands, sparing no efforts to forward the cause of his blessed Redeemer..... He had no contention in his soul, but when his words were all verified he took his stand for right and gave one son to the cause of liberty..... The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Smith, pastor of the Christian Church of West Liberty, in a beautiful and appropriate discourse, which afforded much consolation to is afflicted family and friends.
