APOPLEXY FATAL TO L. L. WEBSTER LOCAL GROCER FOUND UNCONSCIOUS IN KITCHEN OF HOME Asphyxiation First Feared and Pulmotor Summoned- Had Suffered Paralytic Stroke------ Leonard L. Webster, 60, 206 West Sixth street, for the past seven years the proprietor of a grocery store on Iowa avenue, died suddenly Friday evening after 6 o'clock. Death came as the result of apoplexy, following a stroke of paralysis suffered 10 weeks ago. Mr. Webster was found unconscious in the kitchen of his home by Mrs. Webster a few minutes after 6 o'clock. Due to his proximity to a gas stove, and the odor of gas in the room, asphyxiation was feared and the pulmotor summoned from the central fire station. Physicians summoned detected a faint heart beat, and the pulmotor was applied, but Mr. Webster died within a few minutes. Doors and windows of the kitchen were found open, and it was stated by the attending physician, Dr. A. Weaver, that apoplexy had caused death. Mr. Webster, who had been in failing health for a number of years, was in the habit of preparing supper for Mrs. Webster upon her return from the store, and it is supposed that he was stricken while doing so Friday evening. He had consulted Dr. Weaver earlier in the afternoon, complaining that he was feeling badly and unable to see clearly, and was advised to return to his home and rest.------ Obituary------- Mr. Webster was born in Muscatine county Jan. 7, 1868, the son of George and Sarah Webster. His entire life was spent in Muscatine and Louisa counties. For the past seven years, Mr. Webster conducted a grocery store on Iowa avenue. FUNERAL FRIDAY----Obsequies of James Weed Will Be Held From Residence Tommorrow.----ADDED TO THE POPULATION.----Only 71 People in Bloomington When Benj. Weed and Family Came to This Place--Witnessed Growth of Village to Thriving City.------The funeral of Dr. James Weed will be held from the late residence on East Hill Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. F. F. Beckerman, of the Episcopal church, conducting the services. The remains are to be interred at Greenwood cemetery. With the death of James Weed, one of the oldest families of Muscatine becomes extinct. Charles and Fred Bridgeman, nephews, are the only two relatives left by the deceased pioneer, beside his wife, to whom he was married 57 years ago. Dr. Weed came to Muscatine late in the spring of 1839 in company with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Weed, and sister, Eliza, where his father at once commenced the practice of medicine.----Trip Interesting----James Weed was born in Collinsville, Conn., December 26, 1813, and was thus in the 91st year of his life. The family removed from to North Canton, the same state, from which place they started overland for Muscatine, which was then the flourishing little river town of Bloomington. They reached Pittsburg and from there came down the Ohio river to the Mississippi, and then up that stream to Muscatine, added four to Bloomington's population of something like 71 people.----Practiced Medicine.----There were not many physicians in Muscatine when Dr. Benj. Weed established himself here with his son, James, and in fact there weren't enough people to demand very many doctors. Benj. Weed died March 5, 1846, before the town of Muscatine was incorporated, but he had established a business here and his son maintained it for several years.-----Surveyed in 1836.----In view of the fact that the town of Bloomington was not surveyed until 1836, it will be readily seen that James Weed was a very early settler. He had watched the place grow from a mere village of 70 people to a large, thriving city, and some benefit is certainly due him for the advancement made. His energy, public spiritedness, and ambition were great incentives to the earlier settlers of Muscatine.

A SAD FUNERAL--- Services at St. Matthias Church This Morning Over Mr. and Mrs. Weingert. -----From Friday's Daily. ------- This morning at 9 o'clock a host of the friends of the late Peter Weingert and wife, Josephine , gathered at St. Matthias church, on Eight street, to pay the last sad respects to their two departed friends. The fact that the large church room was crowded to its utmost capacity was a touching token of the widespread grief the death of these two loved ones had caused. At promptly nine o'clock the two caskets were tenderly carried by friends down between the two long lines of Mechanics, of which order the husband had been a member, and into the house of worship. Slowly to the mournful music of the funeral dirge, the two departed ones were brought to the altar, and then, as the soft and low notes from the choir above the congregation fell on the ear, every head was bowed, and tears filled the eyes of friends. The caskets were covered with beautiful floral offerings and the flags of the Mechanic order stood tall and stately, draped with crape, above the casket of Mr. Wiengert. Father Laurent took as his text on which to speak of the dead, the following: "Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided." "Does not the sight of the casket of man and wife, lying side by side, appeal to our hearts. Although Mr. Weingert was not a member of the Catholic church in life and it is not the custom to administer the funeral rites to one of another denomination, it shall be so in this case, for his loved wife was a faithful member and I knew him to be in life a kind and faithful man to his family. It was pathetic when the wife, lying near unto death, asked how Peter was, who was also at death's door in the room below, and then when she finally passed away it was thought best not to tell him of the fact and in this way hasten his end. When the ceremony is performed for one departed life it is a sad affair, but when, as in this case, it is for two in the bloom of life, it is especially sad. Many are the thoughts for the large family of eight children who are left orphans, but I have no fear for them for they are in the hands of Christ, who will not let them suffer. It pleases me to see the great crowd here this morning for it shows how earnest are friends in their grief, and do not let these departed ones freeze in the cold earth for want of remembrance. Pray for them." The bodies were followed to the Catholic cemetery, where the interment took place.

Third Death in the Home.---- Late Saturday afternoon, Peter Weingart, Sr., answered the inevitable call of death, and pased from this aged and troubled world to the mystery of the life beyond. Just a few days before, his son and daughter-in-law were laid to rest side by side in the city of the dead, and now the dense cloud of sorrow has been thickened by the sudden death of the father. Many hearts have been saddened, and the sympathizing friends are many throughout the city. The physicians say that death came as the natural resultant of old age, but undoubtedly the recent sorrows that have swept over the aged heart hastened the end.--------- Mr. Weingart was born in Germany, April 9, 1828, and consequently attained the age of 71 years, 9 months and 24 days. He came to this country in 1854, and lived in Muscatine ever since, his useful, upright life and unsullied character winning the esteem that is accorded by his fellow man to the truly worthy citizen. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Kate Weingart and Mrs. Frank Koeckeritz, who in their multiplied grievous bereavement have the deepest sympathy of the community. Decedent was one of the oldest members of the German Mechanics Aid Society, which will have charge of the funeral, which is appointed to take place Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Koeckeritz, at 108 East Eighth street. The funeral will be strictly private, immediate relatives and neighbors only attending. Friends are kindly requested no to send flowers.

Death's Second Visit.------ The gloomy shadows of sorrow deeply thickened about the Weingart home yesterday afternoon, when the silent reaper came into the home for the second time this week. On Monday a loving and tender mother passed into the realms of eternity, and yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock the husband and father, who had been ailing with peritonitis, followed the wife through the valley of the shadow of death. Eight orphans, in a dazed and half-realizing way, mourn the loss of their parents who cared for and loved them, and now the home is desolate and comfortless.------------ The sad event has not only cast a gloom over the near relatives, but all who knew the family have a deep and sincere sympathy that goes out to them in doubly sad bereavement. Mr. Weingart was in a semi-conscious state when his wife passed away and so did not realize that she had gone, never to return to earthly scenes and endearments.---------- PETER J. WEINGART was born in Muscatine on February 16, 1857, and consequently was in his 43rd year. For many years he was an industrious and faithful employe of the Musser Lumber company, being connected with the planing mill. He was a sterling citizen, good neighbor and a true friend, whose going will be deplored by all who knew and esteemed him. The children who are left to the tender mercies of others are Nellie, Fred, Frank, Laura, Harry, Ralph, William and Leo. His father, two sisters, Miss Kate Weingart and Mrs. Frank Koeckeritz, also survive. The double funeral will occur Friday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Matthias church, of which Mrs. Weingart was a devoted member.------- Submitters’ Note: See also obituary posted under Josephine Weingart : Muscatine Journal, Saturday, February 3, 1900 - Services at St. Matthias Church This Morning Over Mr. and Mrs. Weingert.

Two Drive Over Ice To Death In Mississippi--- Jessie Welsch and Clifton Briegel of Montpelier Victims of Tragedy---- One Is A Bridegroom------- Wife of less than a year mourns for Welsch - Discover of submerged automobile and body of one of the occupants confirms fears of families.--- Death rode with Jessie Welsch, 27, and Clifton Briegel, 15, two well known residents of Montpelier, yesterday when they embarked on an automobile trip across the frozen waters of the Mississippi at a place. The discovery of the submerged automobile and the lifeless remains of the former today verified the fears of the community aroused late yesterday when the young men failed to return from their trip made perilous by soft ice along the Illinois shore.---- Body In Car----- From daylite until noon, the searching parties which had gone from Montpelier to hunt for the missing pair toiled to remove the car from the icy waters, succeeding only a few minutes before noon. Welsch's body was found in the back seat, hands over the bow of the top evidently drowning as he made his last desperate effort to release himself from the car. The boy's body was not in the car and had evidently been washed out by the swift current which flows at this particular point of the casualty and which was its direct cause. The drowning occurred at Morehouse Gap, the point where the Mississippi unites before Morehouse Island near the Illinois shore. At this point the river current sweeps with exceptional swiftness around the point of the island and the water is about 14 feet deep. It is stated that about a week ago, the current had prevented the ice from freezing but since then a thin sheet of ice formed through which the car broke and sank to the bottom with its human cargo.---- It is stated that Welsch and the Briegel boy started from Montpelier shortly before two o'clock yesterday afternoon intending to go to the Welsch farm on the Illinois shore for a short trip as Jessie intended to Cultivate the Illinois farm during the coming summer. Welsch's dog was taken along and rode the running board of the car. The top was up and curtains were hung on the left side next to the steering wheel handled by Welsch.----- About an hour after they had started the dog returned to the Welsch home in Montpelier, wet and trembling with cold. The circumstance was considered most unusual but that tragedy was connected to his return was not thought of at the time. As hours passed, however, and the two did not return as expected, fears were aroused and the return of the dog was looked upon with greater significance. As evening drew on, a definite Alam was sent out and searching parties were formed. Throughout the greater part of the night the islands were searched and the trail of the auto was found. The tracks of the car indicated that Welsch had driven directly across the stream to the road on the Illinois shore. The Welsch farm lies about a mile and a half below Montpelier on the Illinois shore. After following the Illinois road which was rough and difficult to travel for a time, the car had evidently been turned about and driven to the river again. The dangers of searching over the soft ice in the darkness caused a cessation of the activities of the hunting parties but the Schmidt Brothers, well know fisherman and trappers of the vicinity who lived on the Illinois shore were notified about Midnight. With the coming of daylight, George Schmidt volunteered to take the searching party on the island to the spot where the accident was believe to have occurred. He led them down to the Velie cutoff along the Illinois shore until the Morehouse Gap was reached. Here a long narrow slit in the ice at the end of which was a larger of air hole was visible. "The ice was very thin there" Schmidt stated, "if they broke through that's the mostly place. A cautious advance was made on the air hole where a recently repaired inter tube was found floating on the water. Long poles were thrust into the hole and the top of the auto was reached. By a pre-arranged signal, a volley was fired to indicate that the auto had been found and all other searching parties immediately came to the spot. As the ice was most treacherous, a boat was secured and a large section of the ice around the spot where the auto had sunk was cut away. The car evidently cut through the ice, causing the narrow slit in the ice and then broken through sinking directly to the bottom in an upright condition. Large nets were strung from the car to within a few feet of the shore to prevent the bodies from being carried downstream in case they slipped from the car while the rescuers were at work. The car sank about sixty feet from shore.------ Long ropes with large anchors and hooks attached were dropped into the water around the car but only after several hours of efforts did the men succeed in getting a good grip on the submerged auto owing to the depth of the water at the point of sinking. At about 11:20 o'clock the car had been pulled to within a few feet from the shore when it was hoisted slowing. The unmistakable figure of a man in the back seat caused the cutting away of the top of the car which had prevented his escape and Welsch's body was brought to view. The scene which followed was a pathetic one. The stiffened body was taken from the car and laid on the bank while a search was made for the body of the Briegel boy. The car was hoisted entirely to the surface of the water but there was not a trace of the boy. As he sat on the open side of the car it is believed that he either jumped or fell out of the vehicle as it sank or was washed from the car by the swift current later.------ That no more lives were lost in the accident is said to have been due to the fact that Welsch and the lad started on their trip a few minutes earlier than they had anticipated as the former had excepted to take his father, Julius Welsch and his own wife with him on the journey at two o'clock. However he started a few minutes before the time set for his father and wife to accompany him.----- Jessie Welsch the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Welsch of Montpelier was born in Montpelier township, residing there throughout his life. He was born January 21, 1890, and had but recently celebrated his twenty-seventh birthday. He was united in marriage March 21, 1916, with Miss Florence Franklin of Montpelier township.------ Since the marriage he has been proprietor of a grocery store at Montpelier but previous to that time had followed the vocation of farmer with his father. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father, step mother, two brothers and five sisters. Clifton Briegel was also a native of Montpelier and had resided there through his entire life. He was fifteen years old and was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. August Briegel.------- With the discovery that Clifton's body was not in the car, Welsch's body was brought back to Montpelier and plans were made for dynamiting the river near the scene of the accident in the hope of recovering the youth's body. No plans for burial services or an inquest over Welsch's body has been made this noon.
