BODY OF WOMAN IS FOUND IN STREAM - Unidentified Corpse Discovered Lodged Against Government Boat Today. Inquest Is Held. No Marks of Violence Are Found on Body and Jury Finds That Death Was Due to Drowning. Body Will Be Interred Late Today at Local Cemetery. --- The lifeless body of an unidentified woman was discovered floating in the Mississippi river in front of the city this morning at about 6 o'clock. No marks of violence were found on the body and the coroner's jury found that the woman came to her death by drowning. No marks oŁ Identification were found upon her clothing and it is likely that she will be buried as an unknown in the potter's field at the city cemetery late today. --- The features were obscure because of the bloated condition of the body and identification would be difficult. The police in up-river cities have been notified but thus far no information has been received with reference to any drowning, nor is any woman reported to be missing in the northerly cities. --- While no evidence was discovered which might establish the fact that the woman was murdered, members of the party of rivermen who viewed the remains held an opinion to the effect that life was extinct when she was thrown into the water, for the limbs were not cramped, as is often the case in drowning. --- Found By Engineer. --- The corpse was discovered lodged against one of the boats in the government fleet anchored near the Rock Island round house by C. A. Nye, of Decatur, Ill., who is employed as a government engineer in work which is being done along the river. He found the body at about 6 o'clock and when other members of the party were called to the place, the body was drawn to the shore, where it awaited the coming of the coroner. The remains were removed to the Meyers undertaking parlors, where the inquest was held later in the morning. --- The Description. --- The description of the unknown woman as given in the coroner's report follows: Woman is white complexioned; height, 5.7 feet, and weighs about 170 pounds; long reddish black hair with brown eyes; is probably about 3O to 35 years of age; was attired in a blue serge suit, white skirt and black buttoned cloth topped shoes. The only ornament found was a medal bearing the inscription "St. Louis Exposition, 1904." --- The Inquest. --- Testimony was taken from but two witnesses in the inquest which was held. Mr. Nye told of the finding of the body and his testimony was corroborated by Deputy Marshal Ballast, who was called and assisted in bringing the body to the shore. The Jurors who found that the death was due to drowning were: Homer W. Burke, Heradon Schriner and Henry Strake.
