WILLIAM TISOR, BRAKEMAN, DIES AFTER BEING CRUSHED BETWEEN TRAIN AND A CAR--- Accident Follows Flying Switch at Gravel Pit--- LIVES FIVE HOURS-- Injured Man Succumbs to Internal Injuries--Funeral at Columbus Junction Monday.----- William Tisor, 24, of Fruitland township, a brakeman for the Automatic Gravel company, died at 3 O"clock this morning as a result of injuries sustained when he was crushed between two gravel cars yesterday evening about 10 o'clock, while switching at the company's plant on Muscatine Island. This is the second death in Muscatine in four months to result from injuries sustained through flying switches. Lewis A. Law, switching foreman for the Rock Island, was almost instantly killed on March 12 when run over by a string of cars cut loose in a flying switch operation in the local yards. There were no witnesses to the accident, although other workmen were within 20 feet of the scene of the mishap. Tisor was conscious until a short time before his death, however, and was able to relate to attendant physicians and relatives how the accident occurred. His brother, Henry was engineer on the train, but did not see the accident.---- Flying Switch Cause---- According to the account of the tragedy as related by the injured man, he was engaged in switching operations and had made a "flying switch" of a gravel car, "kicking" it from the main lines onto a sidetrack. Apparently the car did not have sufficient momentum to roll as far down the sidetrack as the switching crew had thought and stopped just, as it cleared the main line. Tisor boarded the platform of the rear gravel car as the train backed down the main line holding to the steps of the car with his back towards the sidetracks. As the train passed the sidetracked car there was not sufficient room between them to clear the man's body and he was jammed. Before the train could be brought to a stop he was rolled between the two cars for a distance of several feet, sustaining a fracture of the pelvis and other internal injuries, which caused his death. Cries of the injured man attracted other nearby workmen to the scene. Dr. T. F. Beveridge was hastily summoned and gave him medical attention, afterwards removing him to the Hershey hospital in the Rankin Undertaking company's ambulance where Dr. Beveridge and Dr. L. C. Howe attended him. Early this morning Dr. A. J. Oliver was called into consultation. A cursory examination at the scene of the accident failed to reveal any fracture and there was not much external evidence of any serious injuries, but it developed that the man was beyond medical assistance when the doctors arrived, Dr. Howe said this morning. At that time the victim was practically pulseless. Ground Between Cars Crushing internal injuries and an abdominal hemorrhage were responsible for the man's death. Severe bruises about the body and limbs and minor lacerations about his head and body were inflicted as he was ground between the cars, but were not of a serious nature, the attending surgeons said. Coroner M. P. Goff said this morning that no official report of the accident had yet been made to him, and that because the man survived his injuries several hours there would probably be no inquest.---- Had Lived at Grandview---- William Perry Tisor was born in Toolsboro, Ia., June 11, 1906. He had been in the employ of the Automatic Gravel company since March this year. Before his removal here he had been employed at Grandview. About three years ago he married Miss Bessie Hidlebaugh, one child Marjean Mary now 2 years old, was born to them. Besides his wife and daughter he is survived by his father, George Tisor, and mother Sarah Tisor of Columbus Junction; six brothers, Edward, Clyde, Jessie and Louis of Columbus Junction, Henry of Fruitland township and Charles 610 East Fourth street, Muscatine; and three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Wilson of Wapello, Mrs. Maggie Manley of Columbus Junction and Miss Eva Tisor of Columbus Junction. Funeral services will be conducted at Columbus Junction Monday. Definite arrangements have not been announced.----- Notes from June Welsch:---his wife Bessie remarried William's brother Lewis Tisor in 1927-----Additional Information from June:Interment Record for William Perry Tisor--- Name: William Perry Tisor-- Sex: M-- Born: 1900-- Died or Buried: 1924-- Age: 24-- Buried: Columbus City (township = Columbus City)-- County/State: Louisa, IA-- Book: LCC ©1990 - page CC-112-- Notes: 1900-1924; husband of Bessie.

PHOEBE TOBIN----- MRS. PHOEBE TOBIN CALLED BY DEATH ------------ NONOGENERIAN PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING ------------ Life Fails One of The Oldest And Most Loved Women in City---93 Years Old ------------ Mrs. Phoebe Tobin, one of the oldest residents of Muscatine, succumbed this morning at 10 o'clock at the home of her grandchildren at 1215 Smalley avenue, East Hill, she being within one month of attaining the age of 93 years. Up to the time of her last illness three months ago, she was in remarkably excellent health for a woman of her advanced years. As an evidence of the good health she enjoyed, she made all her own Christmas presents. Needle and fancy work was indulged in by her until just recently when weakness and general debility compelled her to be confined to her home. One of her greatest delights was the giving of presents of her own handiwork to the little tots of her neighborhood. The consequence was that she was affectionately termed, " Grandma Tobin " by them and was generally known by this appellation by most of her acquaintances. Among the long time residents of this community perhaps none was more cheerful, patient and forebearing than she. About a year ago, she invited her nephew, then 82 years old and living in West Union, to come to this city on a visit. Writing her that he was too feeble to undertake the rigors of the journey, he invited his aunt in turn to make the trip. Accompanied by her granddaughter, Miss Hattie Kane, she accomplished the journey with ease, changing trains twice en route. Mrs. Tobin, nee Smith, was born ar Pearmont, New Hampshire, April 17, 1818, in the Green Mountain country. With her husband she moved to Canada in 1849, residing at Hemingford for four years. Then they decided to come west and going via the St. Lawrence river and great lakes, reached Chicago. From there they traveled by stage to Dubuque and then to Maquoketa and Iowa City. After a six weeks stay at the latter place they came to Muscatine in 1854. Her marriage to David Tobin took place in 1842 at Middlebury, Vt. For the past fifty-seven years she has been a resident of Muscatine and witnessed its growth from a small town to its present proportions. To survive her demise Mrs. Tobin leaves five grandchildren, with all of whom she made her home. They are John and Charles Kane, Miss Hattie Kane and Mrs. H. C. Thiesen. Two nieces of hers, both sisters, are the only other near relatives whom she leaves to mourn her loss. One of them, Sister Mary Loyola, is in the convent at Dubuque, Iowa, and the other, Mrs. Mary Powers, resides in Riversdale, Cal. The funeral will be held at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock Thursday morning and burial will take place in the church cemetery. In the absence of Father Leonard the funeral services will be conducted by Father Reilly.
