MRS. M. E. SHAMMO HAS PASSED AWAY----PROMINENT MUSCATINE WOMAN VICTIM OF APOPLEXY.----Suffered Stroke Ten Days Ago and Remained in a Comatose State Until Her Death.----The death of Mrs. Mary E. Shammo occurred at 8 o'clock this morning, at her home on Smalley avenue, Riverview, and followed an illness of ten days. Her death was due to a stroke of apoplexy which she suffered on Sunday, October 29, and her demise was expected for the past week. She was rendered unconscious by the stroke, and remained in a comatose state until her death, although she was able to recognize her daughters when they visited her deathbed. The announcement of Mrs. Shammo's departure will be received with deep sorrow by a large acquaintance. She has for many years been one of the most prominent women of the city. She was an active member of the First Methodist church of Muscatine, and was also affiliated with the order of the Eastern Star. She was conspicuous in literary circles, enjoying a membership in the Twentieth Century club and the Shades Reading Circle. The woman was highly esteemed, and received the greatest respect from all who were privileged to be included in her acquaintance.---Born in the East.----Mary Elizabeth Myers was born near Hollidaysburg, Pa., in 1838, and came to Muscatine when she was but thirteen years of age. She had made her home in this city since that time, and may therefore well be called a pioneer resident of Muscatine. The loss of Mrs. Shammo is keenly felt by the members of her immediate family. Her husband, Samuel Shammo, to whom she was united in marriage in 1867, preceded her in death, but two daughters survive, they being Mrs. Roy C. Brown, of Granger, Wash., and Mrs. Clymer A. Coldren, of Phoenix, Ariz. Three sisters, Mrs. Anna Evans, of Chicago; Mrs. Rebecca Dill, of Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Ida Titterington, of Rock Island, Ill., survive as does one brother, William B. Myers, of Checotah, Okla. Three grandchildren, Samuel Shammo Coldren, Roger Shammo Brown, and Richard Karen Brown, also mourn her death. The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon from the home, but the hour has not been set as yet.

DEATH'S CALL.---It was Answered this Afternoon by Samuel Shammo.---HIS DEMISE WAS UNEXPECTED.----Death of Samuel Shammo. The community at large will be painfully surprised to learn of the death of one of its most respected citizens, Samuel Shammo, who departed this life at 1:15 o'clock this afternoon, at the family residence on East Fourth street. Very few of his acquaintances had been aware of the illness of Mr. Shammo, which dates from last Monday at midnight, when he was attacked with a congestive chill. He rallied from the prostrating effect of the chill and was supposely regaining his wonted health, until this noon, when he suffered a sudden relapse, it being the result of complication of heart and brain trouble, and despite all efforts to restore his failing energies, he passed peacefully away. Mr. Shammo was born March 21, 1829, in Halifax, Pa., and was therefore in his 68th year. Mr. Shammo came to this place from Pennsylvania over forty years ago. We find his name in the first city directory, issued in 1856, and his ocupation is there given as a harness maker. He worked a number of years at his trade with Alex Jackson and then went into the grocery business. For some years he was in partnership with J. A. Bishop and then became senior member of the wholesale grocery house of Shammo & Cummins, who conducted a successful business for many years in the Ogilvie block on Front street, now known as the Commercial Hotel. The firm retired from active mercantile life about ten years ago, each with a well-earned competency. Mr. Cummins preceded Mr. Shammo in death only a few months ago. Mr. Shammo was a quiet, unobtrusive man, known best and most appreciated by his immediate circle of friends. For some years past defective hearing caused him to mingle less often than before with his fellow citizens, but among these with whom he was familiar he was ever greeted as a genial, whole-souled companionable man. He had been for a number of years a member of the Methodist church. Mr. Shammo was united in marriage in this city in 1868 with Mary E. Meyers, who with two daughters Misses Carrie and Eva, survive. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Garnes, of Muscatine Island, and Mrs. Rebecca Brubaker, of Halifax, Pa. The deep sympathy of their many friends will be extended to Mrs. Shammo and daughters in their great affliction. The time of the funeral will be announced later.

A Case of Poisoning. A Young Man at Nichols Dies by His Own Hand. The passengers of the Muscatine Western last evening brought in the news of the sudden death by poisoning of a young man named Shew, aged about 25, a brother-in-law of Dr. Carl, of Nichols. The young man walked into his brother's drugstore and either purposely or by mistake took poison, from which he died yesterday morning about 9 or 10 o'clock. The reports seem somewhat conflicting and it is almost impossible to secure accurate information. In response to a request for particulars, the Journal received the following telegram from Nichols this afternoon: "Nichols, Iowa, Oct. 1, 1890.--This man Shew was found by his brother-in-law (Dr. Carl) yesterday morning. He had the appearance of having taken an over-dose of something and it was impossible to awaken him. He died at 2:20 yesterday. Operator." (The operator at Nichols says that the above is all the information he could get concerning the suicide there. It occurred Monday night.)

LEROY SOLBRING---- INJURIES FATAL TO FARMER LAD ------------ The injuries sustained on Thursday by Leroy Solbring, who was impaled on the handle of a hayfork while working at the farm of W. H. Camehl, in Sweetland township, proved fatal, the young fellow who was until recently an inmate of the Orphan's Home at Davenport, passing away at Hershey hospital at 2 o'clock this morning. The injuries received by the boy were found to be more serious than what was at first supposed, and it was realized yesterday that the chances of recovery were very remote. The lad sustained the fatal injury when, after pitching some hay into the loft of the Camehl barn, he threw the fork to the floor and then leaped down. The teeth of the instrument stuck in the wood floor below and as the youth descended he struck the staff, which deeply penetrated his body. The lad is an orphan and the authorities of the Davenport home will take charge of the body, which will likely be sent to Davenport this evening.
