OBITUARY----- Elizabeth Flanders, daughter of Ziba and Ruth Flanders, was born at Rutland, Vermont, February 22, 1843. Here her young life was spent and her early schooling was received. When a young woman she came to Grundy County, Illinois, with relatives with whom she made her home for some time. March 6, 1871 she was, united in marriage to Charles Robinson, To this union eight children were born Eugene, who was laid to rest at the age of nine years; Frank C. and Alice DeForest of West Liberty; Millie E. March 1, 1893 the family moved to the vicinity of West Liberty, where May 8, 1908, the home was broken up by the death of the husband and father, since which time the deceased has made her home among the children. Having spent the greater part of her life ministering to others she was not content to be ministered unto, so in December, 1918, she prevailed upon the children to permit her to establish her own home on East Sixth street. This was but temporary for in a few weeks she suffered a paralytic stroke which rendered unavailing the self-dependence which she so earnestly sought. In the years that followed, her health improved and the past two years her ardent desire has been fulfilled in her home on North Calhoun street, when her health and wishes permitted. Having lost her sense of hearing in early life, she was deprived of the satisfaction of mingling in public functions, hid applied herself diligently to the welfare of her family with the one thought in mind, that each should live as God intended. While she had never become identified with a church organization, she held to the true principles of Christian teaching and valued virtue above profession. Her usual health continued until the last two weeks when a weakened heart brought its attendant suffering, and tho kindly hands relieved her closing hours, she peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles DeForest, on Tuesday evening, October 11, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 19 days Burial took place Friday at Mt. Another Home Darkened----- Died, of complications of diseases after an illness of over three months, Louie G., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Rock. She was born Jan. 27th, 1887 and died June 17th, 1897, at the age of 10 years, 5 months, and 21 days. Louie was a bright child of a gentle and affectionate nature, ever thoughtful of those around her. But words of praise for the departed are unnecessary. During her mother's illnes in the spring, little Lou was so anxious to make it pleasant at home so "mamma would get well." And although her own health was failing, this heroic little girl bore up patiently without complaint until her strength gave out entirely. Then followed days of most severe suffering and delirium. She was a very patient sufferer, never having once complained of pain for several weeks before her death. She failed gradually as a flower plucked plucked from its stem withers and dies. She bade the grief-stricken family an affectionate farewell and said, "Jesus Christ receive my spirit. I hope we may all meet in heaven." About six in the evening her life went as calmly and peacefully as though she were just falling asleep.

Rosenberger Rites to Be Held Saturday-----Death of Attorney Recalls Bombing of Saloon Days.--- Final rites for Nathan Rosenberger, 80, retired Muscatine attorney, will be conducted at the First Congregational church at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. R. W. Merrifield, pastor. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Rosenberger died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Don B. Russell, at Oskaloosa, Wednesday afternoon. He had been seriously ill about a year ago but recovered. Although his health was not good, his death was unexpected. He suffered a heart attack shortly after noon from which he failed to rally. During the earlier years of his law practice in Muscatine, Mr. Rosenberger attracted considerable attention with his campaign against the liquor traffic and the saloons of the city. He remained an ardent prohibitionist all his life.----- Homes Bombed.----- At about 1:30 a.m. on May 11, 1893, the home of Mr. Rosenberger on North Mulberry avenue, along with those of John Mahin, then editor of the Journal, on West Second street, and of E. M. Kessinger, retired capitalist, on East Fifth street, were bombed and the three men with their families narrowly escaped death. A story in The Journal of May 11, 1893, vividly pictures the horror of the families at that early morning hour when their homes were virtually razed by explosions within seconds of each other. The story of that date blames “the tools of the saloons” for the outrage. Monetary loss was estimated at about $15,000. The story relates that the three men had been active in attempting to enforce the law in Muscatine relative to the operation of the saloons and that there was no doubt but that saloon interests were behind the bombing.----- Born in Indiana.----- Nathan Rosenberger was born at Thorntown, Ind., June 6, 1853, one of the eight children of Henry and Elizabeth Mills Rosenberger. He spent his youth on the home farm near Thorntown until he was 18. He attended the district schools and spent one year at the academy at Thorntown and four years at the academy at Spiceland, Ind., where he finished his course and did postgraduate work. Later he became a student at Penn college, Oskaloosa, Ia., and for six years engaged in teaching. He was then elected county superintendent of schools of Jefferson county. When his interest became aroused in the legal profession, he began the study of law under ex-United States Senator Wilson. He successfully passed the bar examination on June 16, 1866 and began his practice in Muscatine where he has remained since. Mr. Rosenberger married Miss Ellen J. Prizer on Sept. 6, 1886. He was a member of the republican party, but never sought office. Surviving are the widow, Ellen P. Rosenberger, Muscatine; four children, Charles J. Rosenberger, Muscatine; Mrs. Don B. Russell and Mrs. J. H. Ruby, both of Oskaloosa, Dr. Henry P. Rosenberger, St. Paul, two brothers, Jeremiah Rosenberger, Thorntown, Ind., and Absolom Rosenberger, Whittier, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Rachel Dill, California; one half-sister, Mrs. Eva Clark, Boise, Idaho; a step-brother, Alphonso Hadley, and a step-sister, Lydia Hadley, both of Boise, Idaho; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Florence Rosenberger, Colfax, Ind. The body is at the Meyers Funeral Home where it will remain until funeral services.-------“THE MUSCATINE JOURNAL and NEWS-TRIBUNE”, Muscatine, Iowa, Monday, October 16, 1933, page 10------ Rosenberger Rites Conducted at Church Final rites for Nathan Rosenberger, retired Muscatine attorney whose death occurred at the home of his daughter in Oskaloosa Wednesday, were conducted at the First Congregational church at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. R. W. Merrifield, pastor. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. Pallbearers were E. E. Welk, Frank Cook, Ira Crow, Dr. J. L. Young, A. H. Schwab and Dr. B. M. Smith.

ALICE ROUNDS----- MOLINE WOMAN DIES UNEXPECTEDLY HERE ------------ HEART FAILURE CAUSES SUDDEN DEATH SATURDAY ------------ Mrs.Alice Rounds, Shortly Following Arrival In This City, Is Overcome By Death ------------ Completing a trip from Moline, Illinois, to this city and having been here but a few minutes, Mrs. Rounds, about fifty years old, suddenly expired Saturday afternoon at half past four o'clock at the office of the Noble & Halfleigh Feed company on East Second street. She had been in ill health for several months and had come to Muscatine to recuperate, planning to visit the home of her step-son, Melvin rounds, who resides on a farm in the vicinity of Illinois City. Mrs. Rounds was met at the depot by him as she alighted from the Firefly, preparatory to driving her to his place of residence. She complained of feeling unwell, a nauseating feeling coming over her. Reclining heavily on the arm of her son, she traveled the distance from the depot to the Noble and Halfleigh office. The exertion and efforts of the travel from her home to this city proved too much for her weakened condition and almost simultaneously with her being seated on a chair in the office, she fainted and was never revived. But for her son, she would have fallen to the floor. Dr. E. K. Tylor was hurriedly summoned but before the physician could reach her side, Mrs. Rounds breathed her last. She had died three minutes after having lapsed into unconsciousness. Death was due to heart failure, a malady with which she had been affected for several years. The body was taken to the J. W. Rankin funeral establishment, from which place it was prepared for removal to Moline yesterday morning at 11:30 o'clock.

His illness was of such short duration that death was most unexpected. About ten days ago he was overcome with sickness, but gave no indication of being in a precarious condition until this morning, and even then his death came as a shock. He had been afflicted with hip trouble from childhood, acute infection from this causing his demise. He was 32 years old. Mr. Rowland was one of the most noted of the younger educators of Iowa. A graduate of the Southern Iowa Normal school at Bloomfield and Drake university at Des Moines, he was almost immediately recognized as an instructor of exceptionable ability. After having taught various schools in Davis county following his graduation, his excellent work was rewarded by his election to the Principalship of the Belknap High school. In charge of this school for only one year, he was the overwhelming choice for county superintendent of Davis county, a position which he creditably filled for seven years. He then accepted the principalship of the LeClaire High school, coming to this city as principal of Jackson school, after having held the former position one year. Since coming to this city last year he proved himself one of the most popular principals the Jackson school has ever had. He was re-elected last spring by the local board of education. His popularity extended particularly to the boys of the school. Mr. Rowland, athletically inclined despite his affliction, being prominent in organizing baseball teams among the youngsters of the Jackson school, and supervising other athletic games. On numerous occasions he, himself, participated in the games, the consequence being that he was a prime favorite with his pupils. The deceased was born in 1879 at Bloomfield, Davis county. Three years ago he was married to Miss ____ Clark, also of Bloomfield. No children were born to their union. In addition to his widow, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Rowland of Bloomfield; a brother, C. T. Rowland, of Kansas City, Mo.; another A. L. Rowland, of St. Louis; and three in Muscatine, being J. A., G. C., and K. N. Rowland. One sister, Mrs. B. M. Stansberry, of Moberly, Mo., also survives him. Fraternally he was a member of the order of the Masons and Odd Fellows. It has not been decided whether burial will take place in this city or in Bloomfield, the place of his birth.---------------------The Muscatine Journal, Saturday, 2 September 1911, page 4---------

Died, at the home of her parents, Miss Julia Ryan, after an illness of six months, Sunday, December 27, at the age of 27 years. The young people regret losing such an esteemed friend and the community sympathize with the members of the family.---- In Memoriam.----- On Sunday, December 27th, Feast of St. John, Julia Ryan departed this world at the early age of 25, and returned to her Creator, whom she served so faithfully and well during life. She was for many years organist of her parish church at Nichols, and her voice swelled the chorus of praise offered to the Most High. Her departure now leaves a vacnacy that will be felt for many a year..... On Wednesday morning when her funeral took place, the church was crowded with mourning friends, and outside there was a large number who could not gain admitttance. The holy sacrifice of the mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Nolan.
