DIED,---- At 1:55 a. m., Saturday, June 12, 1880, of malarial fever, Mrs. Pascalena P. Phelps, aged 61 years. Mrs. Phelps was born at Natchez, Miss., in 1819, and moved to Muscatine in 1842, having made this place her home ever since. She leaves four sons and one daughter. Two of her sons - Lorenzo A. and Joseph P. live in this place. The others - Charles and Almanza - live at Cairo. The daughter, Miss Nannie, also lives here making her home with her brother, J. P. She and her mother returned only three weeks ago from the South, where they had spent the winter, and where, it is now thought, Mrs. P. contracted the disease which caused her death. The deceased was a devoted mother and a kind neighbor and friend. The funeral took place from the residence of J. P. Phelps, on Third street, nearly opposite the City Hall, at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

Alyce Phillips----- Davenport, Iowa - Alyce Phillips, 98, Davenport, formerly of Eldridge and Durant, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Silvercrest Garner Farms Assisted Living Community, Davenport. The Rev. Darin Lovelace will officiate the services. Burial of remains will be at a later date. Miss Phillips was born Oct. 21, 1906, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Esther Murphy Phillips. She had worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses, including Kresges, Cedar Rapids, and later a gas company in Florida. Before moving to Silvercrest, she had made her home for several years with her cousin, Sue Alpen, in Eldridge. She was of the Methodist faith. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star and of the Royal Neighbors. She was an avid bowler and golfer. She also enjoyed traveling and fishing and going to the cabin in the summers. She also loved to go to the riverboats, spending time with her family and her little angel. Survivors include cousins, Sue Alpen of Eldridge, Donna Jehle of Durant, Ruth Sterner of Davenport and Audrey McMichael of Tampa, Fla., and several others. Mrs. Armilda Phillips.------ Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Armilda Phillips, former local resident, at Mt. Pleasant Iowa, Tuesday morning. Mrs. Phillips was born 7 May 1840, in Virginia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Brewer. She was married to William Royer in 1864 and 23 years ago married to Samuel Phillips. He died a number of years ago. Surviving are one sister and 4 step-children. Funeral services and burial will be at Mt. Pleasant. While in Muscatine Mrs. Phillips resided at 607 Evans street. Notes from June Brewer Welsch: she died May 6, 1930 and her maiden name was Brewer.

Mrs. Phillips, 79, Summoned; Rites Scheduled Friday---- Mrs. Bertha Phillips, 79, died at her home 1314 East Fourth street, at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday following an extended illness. She was born on Sept. 13, 1865, at Dauer, Germany, the daughter of Wilhelm and Wilhelmina Middlestedt Mueller, but came here 63 years ago to make her home. Her marriage to Joseph A. Phillips occurred on Dec. 27, 1888 in Muscatine. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Grace Lutheran church. Surviving are one son, Carl J. Phillips, Muscatine; four daughters, Mrs. Arthur Clark, Mrs. Earl Bowlby and Mrs. John Horning, all of Muscatine, and Miss Gladys Phillips, at home; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Schulz, Muscatine; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, her parents, one brother, three sisters and two granddaughters, Betty and Arlene Clark, preceded her in death. The body is at the residence where services will be conducted Friday and at Grace Lutheran church with the pastor, the Rev. David M. Funk, in charge. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery under the direction of the George M. Wittich Funeral home.

WEST LIBERTY - Carl PHILLIPS, 70, died at his home one mile north of Atalissa Thursday night. The retired farmer was a lifelong resident of the area. --- He was born June 1, 1893 at Atalissa, the son of Fred S. and Minnie E. McLAUGHLIN-PHILLIPS. He was married to Elsie GATZKE Feb. 16 1920, at Iowa City. --- Survivors include sons Dalton of Atalissa and Delbert at home; three daughters, Mrs. Audrey McMICHAEL, Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Ruth STERNER of Davenport and Mrs. Donna JEHLE, West Liberty; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. --- PHILLIPS was a W. CARL J. PHILLIPS---- Carl J. Phillips, 84, 50 Geneva Dr., died Sunday at the Bethesda Care Center. Services will be held Wednesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. Pastor Carl Benander will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Carl Phillips was born Jan. 4, 1894, in Muscatine, the son of Joseph and Bertha Mueller Phillips. He was a life resident of this community. His marriage to Ethel Marie Hines took place July 27, 1912, in Rock Island, Ill. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a retired farmer and livestock buyer. Survivors include his wife: three sons, Carl Fred of Muscatine, Stuart R. of Kansas City, Mo., and Norman L. of LeClair, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Gwendolyn) Robertson and Mrs. Warren (Evelyn) Ford, both of Muscatine; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Gladys Weir of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two daughters.

Dr. C. P. Phillips------ Clarence P. Phillips, 97, died Wednesday, April 6, 1994, at Lutheran homes where he resided. Services Saturday at George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, with Rev. Allan Simms officiating. Florence Hetzler will be the organist. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are Byron Phillips, David Baker, Richard Phillips, Jeffrey Baker, Craig Phillips and Scott Baker. He was born November 15,1896 in Mason City, Iowa to Lambert Whitney and Alice Amelia Payn Phillips. On December 27, 1922 he married Anna Ferne Shinabarger who died in 1970. In 1972 he married Lurline Eldred Abbott who died in 1981. He married Verna Ager on May 22, 1982. She died in 1992. Dr. Phillips graduated from Mason City high school, then attended Grinnell College in Grinnell. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1922. He completed his internship at Norwegian-American Hospital in Chicago, then continued his studies at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He began his practice at Clear Lake in 1923 later moving to Alexander. Came here to Muscatine in 1927, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Muscatine Co. Medical Society, Iowa State Medical Society, 33 Club, B.P.O., Elks Lodge No. 304, Triune Lodge No. 641 and KAABA Schrine. Survivors include two sons, RObert Frank Phillips, of Muscatine, and John Lambert Phillips, of Dunlap, Illinois; two daughters, Ann (Mrs. Leo) Baker of Sun City, Arizona, and Mary (Mrs. Kenneth) Arnold, Rock Island, Illinois; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, wives, and five brothers and sisters.

Ellis PHILLIPS, 62, of 802 Main street was killed instantly shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday when struck by a car driven by Rollie Louis Schenkel, 19, of route 2, Fairport. --- PHILLIPS was reported by asst. Police Chief Joseph Maher and Capt. Jack Roelle, who investigated the accident, to have stepped into the path of the car driven by Schenkel on the West Front street, near the Rock Island railroad freight depot. --- Stepped Before Car --- Witnesses told the police officers that PHILLIPS stepped from behind a parked vehicle on the south side of the street into the path of the car, which was traveling east. Schenkel said that he was traveling at about 25 miles an hour at the time. --- Raymond K. Smith, route 1, Muscatine, told police that he was driving east in a car immediately behind Schenkel, and estimated Schendel’s speed at between 20 and 25 mile and hour. Fred C. Faulkner, 516 Pine street, who was in the second car behind Schenkel, gave a similar estimate of his speed. --- Thought Blowout --- Smith said that he thought that Schenkel had had a blowout as he saw him stop his car. PHIILIPS’ body was carried about 42 feet from the point of impact, officers reported. --- No charges have been placed against Schenkel, and Dr. I. H. Odell, Muscatine county coroner, who conferred with police and visited the funeral home after being notified of the fatal accident, said that no inquest would be held. --- The fatality was the first pedestrian death in Muscatine this year and the 10th motor vehicle fatality in Muscatine county this year.------- Longtime Resident --- Ellis Floyd PHILLIPS was born Sept. 3, 1892 at Douglas, Mo., being a son of Joseph H. and Katherine BARNETT-PHILLIPS, and had been a resident of this community for about 28 years. He married Georgianne HURST May 8, 1913 at Tiggs, Mo. He had been employed as a farm laborer. --- Surviving are three sons, Floyd N. PHILLIPS, James A. PHILLIPS, and Ellis PHILLIPS, Jr., all of Muscatine; his former wife, also of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. Leo MULLENS of Charles City and Mrs. Ronald BRET of Muscatine; four brothers, Joe PHILLIPS of Diggens, Mo., the Rev. Adolph PHILLIPS of Des Moines, Cal PHILLIPS of Council Bluffs, and Louis PHILLIPS of Eldon, Ia.; and two sisters, Mrs. Ernest FRITJOFFON of Richland, Wash., and another whose address and present name are not known; his parents of Council Buffs, and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. --- Funeral services will be conducted Friday at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals by the Rev. Mrs. O. C. Phillips Goes in Death; Rites Thursday---Mrs. Ethel C. Phillips, 59, wife of Orrin C. Phillips, died at Mt. Pleasant at 3:09 p.m. Monday after an extended illness. Her home was at 900 1/2 Sycamore street. The daughter of John W. and Hannah Forbes Rife, she was born at Lone Tree on June 4, 1887 and had been a resident of Muscatine for the past 40 years. Her marriage to Orrin C. Phillips took place on May 19, 1910 at Rock Island. She was a member of the First Baptist church. Surviving are her husband, two sons, Ted O. Phillips and Charles A. Phillips, both of Muscatine; five daughters, Mrs. Howard Peveler of Camanche, Ia., Mrs. E. L. Franklin of Muscatine, Mrs. R. L. Sutherland of Baldwin Park, Calif., and Viola Darlene and Vera Delores Phillips, at home. Also surviving are four brothers, Fay Rife of Minneapolis, Minn., Earl Rife of Lone Tree, Cyril Rife of Davenport and Charles Rife of Long Beach, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Roy Williamson of Tracey, Minn., and 14 grandchildren. Harlan "Skeeter" Phillips was born 8 Feb 1915, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Mammie (Adder) Phillips. Skeeter was a union painter for 45 years. He werved in the US Marine Corps during WW II. He married June Marion Sisk on 6 Oct 1937 in Muscatine. He was a lifetime resident of the Muscatine area and loved to go fishing. Skeeter is survived by a son, David Phillips of Atalissa, two daughters, Scherry Haimes of Davenport and Delores Sivia of Atalissa; two brothers, John Phillips of Moscow and Larry Phillips of CA; four sisters, Betty Tennert of Muscatine, Peg Moore of Moline, Cleo Moore of Muscatine, and Cecil Atkins of Atalissa; ten grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, June his wife, brother Elwood, three sisters Dorothy Ash, Pearl Haynes, Connie Simmons, and one great grandson. The family wishes to thank everyone who has offered their love and support during this time of their loss. Kelly C. Phillips---- Kelly C. Phillips 54, of Montpelier died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Osteopathic hospital, Davenport, after an illness of six months. He was a life resident of the Montpelier community, born May 15, 1907, the son of Orin C. and Viola Ross Phillips. He was an employee of the Portland Cement Company for 32 years. He was married Nov. 27, 1929 to Rosa Stickrod. He was married in 1940 to Erma Smith. Survivors include three sons, Orin Eugene Phillips, Ronald Kirk Phillips and Larry Lee Phillips, all of Montpelier; two daughters, Mrs. Richard Schroeder of Montpelier and Mrs. Jon Pohl of Walnut Grove; one brother; Roy Phillips of Montpelier; and twelve grandchildren; He was preceded by his parents and one sister. Mrs. Matilda Jane Phillips, a resident of Muscatine for more than sixty years died at the home of her son, Jesse Phillips, 708 East Sixth street at 4:30 o’clock Monday afternoon. Old age caused her heath. She was 73 years old. --- Mrs. Phillips was formerly Miss Matilda Jane Wilson was born in Cole county, Missouri, August 9, 1848 and came to Muscatine when she was twelve years old. On October 8, 1863, she was united in marriage with Thomas J. Phillips in Muscatine. Eight children were born to this union, three of whom survive. Her husband preceded her in death by twenty years.--- She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Stoker and Mrs. Rose Weakley of Davenport, and one son, Jesse Phillips of Muscatine. Three sisters, Mrs. Mary McCurdy of Tobias, Nebraska, Mrs. Elizabeth Thornton and Mrs. Ellen Coulter of Letts, and two half brothers, Albert Brown of Muscatine and John Heisinger of Fruitland. Seven grand-children and four great-grand-children also survive. --- Funeral services will be held from the Musserville M.E. church 2 p.m., will conduct the services. Burial will be made in Greenwood Cemetery.

Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery. Mr. Phillips was born Feb. 3, 1886, at Muscatine, and was a life resident here. His parents were Calvin and Cynthin Phillips. He was married to Ethel Sarah Rife on May 19, 1910, at Rock Island. He made his home at 1317 Cedar street. He was a member of the Moose lodge. Surviving are two sons, Ted O. Phillips, Muscatine and Charles A. Phillips, Rock Island; five daughters, Mrs. R. L. Southerland, Danville, Ia., Mrs. Clara Peveler, Camanche, Ia., Mrs. Grace Franklin, Mrs. Lloyd Beatty and Mrs. Gene Fuller, Muscatine; one brother, Edward Phillips, Muscatine; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, a member of the Moose Lodge, served on the executive board for Local No. 431 of the United Food and Commercial Worker for five years, was union steward for 15 years and had served in three contract negotiations with Oscar Mayer and Local No. 431. He had been employed at the Oscar Mayer maintenance power house for 32 years. Survivors include his wife, Sara; one son, James Kelly Phillips of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. Glen (Vicki Lynn) Dusenberry of Moscow; and Mrs. Cloyce (Lisa Marie) Job of Muscatine; five grandchildren; five step grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; his mother, Rosa Nettleton of Muscatine; one brother, Gene Phillips of Bettendorf; three half-brothers, Robert Nettleton of Muscatine; Rodney Nettleton of the state of Washington; and Larry Phillips; one sister, Mrs. Richard (June Rose) Schroeder of Muscatine; and one half-sister, Mrs. Jon (Pat) Pohl of Springfield, Ohio. His father precedes him in death.

Old Resident of Muscatine Passes Away---- Samuel Phillips for over 20 years a resident of this city, died at his late home on Sherman street Saturday evening at 7:45 o'clock, he, with his son, John, of this city, was trimming trees in front of his residence when he received a stroke of paralysis. He lived until that evening when he quietly passed away. Mr. Phillips was born in Indiana over 69 years ago. His children all live in this county and he had many relatives. His wife and four children survive him. The children are: Amanda fisher, 508 Grover street; Mrs. Sarah Spence, 412 Pond Street; Joseph Phillips, Lucas Street and John Phillips, 610 Wallace street. He is also survived by two sisters and two brothers, who are: Mrs. Dell Smith, of Moscow; Mrs. Annie Putney, Muscatine Island; James and Addison Phillips, both of this city. THere are also 19 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The funeral was held this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, short services being held at the house and later services at Greenwood chapel, with Rev. E.C. Brooks in charge. The interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was born Feb. 27, 1909 in Mercer County, Illinois, a daughter of Marion and Clara Gritton Lambert. She had lived here f or most of her life. On June 23, 1933 she married Addison Phillips at Booneville, Mo. She was a 49-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, was past president of the Clark House Resident Association and a member of the Muscatine General Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter, Inez Farrel of Tuscon, Ariz.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974 and a sister.

DEATH CLAIMS---- FRANK PIERCE --------------- Well Known Louisa County Man Dies at Junction at Age 76 --------- Columbus Junction, IA--July 10 Frank Pierce, who had spent practically all of his life in Louisa county and the last 30 years in Columbus Junction, died at about 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the age of 76 years. Mr. Pierce was born in Cochoston county, O., May 3 1854. His mother died when he was a few days old and he was raised by W. B. Davis, who moved when he was 6 years old in a covered wagon from Ohio to Oakland Township in Louisa county. He was married March 18, 1880 to Miss Lucinda Bliven, by the Rev. J. A. Robbins pastor of the Congregational church at Muscatine. She died Jan. 15, 1930. Surviving are five children Elton H. Pierce, Chester E. Pierce, Mrs. Arista Jennings, and Mrs. Roy Aringdale of Columbus Junction and Dale Pierce of Oklahoma City, Okla., A. foster brother G. W. Davis of Woodward, Okla., also survives. He also lived for a short time in Morning Sun. He served as janitor of the Columbus Junction grade school building for a number of years and was recently chosen by the board of education to serve the coming year. He spent Friday and Saturday at the Alex McCullough home at Muscatine and was down town Tuesday afternoon joking with his friends. Owing to the intense heat he was out in the yard under a tree a greater part of Wednesday and when he arouse to go into the house he fell on the steps. He was assisted indoors and death followed in a short time due to heart failure. Notes from June Brewer Welsch: W. B. Davis wife was Charlotte Clark. They moved here around 1860. His birth mother was Catherine Grounheizer.

Mary Elizabeth McCoy, daughter of Francis Marion and Lyda Hawes McCoy, was born near Cairo, Illinois, February 14, 1878, and was aged 75 years, 7 months and 21 days. She came to Columbus City, Iowa, with her parents in childhood and grew to womanhood there. She was united in marriage to Elton H. Pierce, September 21, 1911. They established their home in Columbus Junction and continued to live here until his death August 7, 1953. Mrs. Pierce is survived by one brother Robert McCoy of Davenport, six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Gladys Welsch, her parents, one brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Pierce was interested in her home and for some years has cared for several of her grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Stacy Funeral Home at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. George C. Pennington. Music was by Mrs. B. O. Roundy. Typhoid Fever Fatal To Well Known Woman Mrs. George S. Pitchforth Passed Away Early Today. Funeral Services will take place at the First Presbyterian Church on Monday Following an illness of four weeks duration of typhoid fever, Mrs. George S. Pitchforth, the wife of the advertising manager of the Journal, passed away at Bellevue Hospital earlier today. Although her condition had been serious for some time, several days ago a slight improvement was noticed and hopes were entertained for her recovery until last evening, when the patient suffered a hemorrhage, which presaged the end. Her death occurred shortly after 3 o'clock this morning. The announcement of the death of Mrs. Pitchforth will be received with sorrow by a wide acquaintanceship. The decedent was held in the highest esteem and her friendship was cherished by those who were intimately associated with her. The death is one of tragic sadness, removing from the home a noble wife and a loving mother. Her loss is most keenly felt by her husband and the four-year-son, George Owen, removing from their lives and the home an ennobling influence. Was Born in City Miss Viola Greeley, the daughter of Mrs. W. E. Blakeslee, residing on Fulliam Avenue, was born in Muscatine on May 23, 1886 and made her home in this city during practically her entire life. She was united in marriage to George Pitchforth on May 9, 1906 and this union was blessed by one son. Aside from husband and son, her departure is mourned by her mother and two half-sisters, who are the Misses Ella and Alma Blakeslee. Mrs. Pitchforth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and the funeral services will be held at that church on Monday afternoon, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

South Muscatine Harriet Pitchforth Died Last Evening at home of her Daughter, Mrs. Sarah Schmalz Cause of Death due to Old age together with attending ills--is well known Mrs. Harriet C. Pitchforth, a well known and highly respected resident of this city passed away last evening at 9:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah A. Schmalz, 418 Grandview Avenue, after a brief illness. The cause of death was due greatly to old age which combined with slight complications, greatly weakened her. To her many friends the news of her death will be a great surprise for few people were aware of the fact that she was ill. During the early part of last week she was slightly indisposed but it was not until Thursday that she was compelled to remain in bed. From that time she falled rapidly and the end came last night. She is exceedingly well known in this city and her many friends join in extending their sincerest sympathy to the bereaved children. She was well liked by all who knew her and notwithstanding her age was prominent in all leading church or social movements in the South End. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of this city for a number of years and has always led an upright Christian life. She was extremely charitable and of a loving nature that made her dear to the hearts of all. She was also a member of the South Muscatine Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church and was one of the most active workers. Mrs. Pitchforth, whose maiden name was Miss Harriet Ringley, was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, on September 23rd, 1834 and spent her youth in that country. While still a young girl she was united in marriage to Henry P. Pitchforth and shortly afterwards came to the United States. They came directly to this county and have lived here since that time. Four children were born to them, the first born dying in infancy while the other three are still residents of this city. They being John H., Mrs. Sarah Schmalz and Thomas R. The following children and grandchildren survive and make their home in Muscatine: John H. Pitchforth, corner Sixth and Orange, and his sons, Cleo H., Charles Herbert and William Aubrey: Thomas R. Pitchforth, 511 Bismarck Avenue, and children, George S., Robert E., Ada A., Charles H., Blanche G.: Mrs. Sarah Schmalz, 418 Grandview Avenue and children, Harold W., Ralph R., Charles Ellsworth, Grace Lillian, Sanford H. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Schmalz residence on Grandview Avenue and will be in charge of Rev. Elliott, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.

J. Pitchforth, Retired Grocer, Goes in Death John H. Pitchforth, 84, retired Muscatine groceryman who had spent practically his entire life here, died at Mercy Hospital in Davenport Monday. He had been making his home with his son, Cleo, at 2048 West Third street, Davenport, for the past four years. Mr. Pitchforth suffered a stroke earlier Monday. He was born in Muscatine on March 9, 1862 and received his education here. His marriage to Caroline Mathews took place here on Jan 6, 1882 and she died Dec 24, 1941. Two brothers, one sister and two sons, Herbert and Aubrey, also preceded him in death. Mr. Pitchforth was engaged in the grocery business here for many years. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal church, a member of Iowa lodge No. 2. A.F. and A. M. for 56 years, a charter member of Rose Croix Shrine, White Shrine of Jerusalem and was also a member of Electa chapter No. 32. Order of Eastern Star and of the Knights Templar Lodge. Services will be conducted Wednesday by the Rev. Mr. Moorelock of Davenport, at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Claude E. Platt, Louisa County Farmer, Succumbs ---------- Claude Emerson Platt, 80, who resided on a farm three miles south of Columbus Junction, died at the home of his son, Raymond E. Platt, 600 West Second street, at 6 p.m. Friday after a brief illness. Mr. Platt was born in Muscatine Feb. 3, 1858, the son of Thomas and Maria Platt of Muscatine. He married Martha Sadina Nichols in 1878 and two children were born to this union, G. A. Platt of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Merle Platt of Muscatine, both of whom survive. Mrs. Platt preceded him in death. On May 17, 1890, Mr. Platt married, Elizabeth Mary Eis at Muscatine and two sons were born to this union, Raymond Eis Platt, who survives, and Loyd Emerson Platt, who preceded his father in death. Mrs. Platt also survives, together with a sister, Miss Mae Platt of Davenport and a brother, William Platt of Portland, Ore. The body is at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home 216 West Third street, and will remain there there for rites to be held Tuesday. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

DEATH TAKES LLOYD PLATT -------- Assistant Superintendent of Heinz Plant Succumbs at Mercy Hospital ----------- Lloyd E. Platt, 33, 214 Monroe street, assistant superintendent for the past six years of the Muscatine H. J. Heinz company plant, died at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon at Mercy hospital, Davenport, after an illness of one month. He was born at Muscatine, June 23, 1897, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Platt. Practically his entire lifetime was spent in this community. He had been identified with the Heinz company for 19 years. Mr. Platt was a member of Iowa lodge No. 2, A. F. & A. M. and the Men's club of Trinity Episcopal church. He married Miss Mildred Barger of Muscatine here on Oct. 16, 1926. Mrs. Platt survives. In addition to his widow, Mr. Platt is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Platt, Rollo, Mo., and three brothers, Raymond Platt and Merle Platt, both of Muscatine, and G. A. Platt, Chicago. Funeral services will be conducted at Trinity Episcopal church Thursday afternoon by the Rev. Stanley P. Jones, following short private services at the Platt home. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery. The body will remain at the Wittich Funeral home, which is in charge of funeral arrangements until Wednesday morning, when it will be removed to the home on Monroe street. Operations will be suspended at the Heinz factory and farms here at noon on Thursday, it was announced at the factory this afternoon, after a long distance telephone communication with N. J. Simpson, manager, who is in Pittsburg, Pa., attending a conference. Mr. Simpson and others from the Muscatine branch will not be able to return for the services.

Raymond Platt Dies Suddenly at Holland, Mich. ----------- Raymond E. Platt, 58, a former resident of Muscatine, died unexpectedly Tuesday night at Holland, Mich. Mr. Platt was the son of Clarence E. and Elizabeth Eis Platt and was born April 30, 1895 in Muscatine. He had spent nearly all of his life in Muscatine. He had been employed by the H. J. Heinz Co., for the past 35 years. He formerly was production manager of the Muscatine H. J. Heinz Co. plant and about three years ago he was transferred to Holland, Mich., to assume an executive position at the plant there. Surviving are two stepbrothers, Merle Platt, Muscatine, and G. A. Platt, Chicago. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Lloyd. The body will arrive in Muscatine Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals with Dr. Joseph M. Kennedy, pastor of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Muscatine’s only centenarian, Mrs. Julia Plessy, aged 102 years, died at the home of Paul Begey, 610 East Eighth street, Tuesday. She had made her home with Mr. Begey for the past 24 years.--- The death of Mrs. Plessy was not caused by any particular ailment, but was attributed by her physician to a worn out body. Mrs. Plessy was in her usual good health until Sunday, when her appetite failed for the first time. Previous to that her condition had been exceptionally good for one of her years.--- In recent years she had spent most of the time in her room at the Begey home. Most of her contacts were with immediate relatives. She had only a slight knowledge of the English language, conversing always in French.--- Mrs. Plessy was born in Frerie, France, on Aug. 30, 1833, the daughter of John C. and Mary Frances Brard. She lived there until she was 18 years of age, coming to America at the time and settling in New York City. During a visit to St. Louis she met John Plessy and they were married in Muscatine County on Nov. 15, 1858. They operated a truck farm for a number of years. --- Mrs. Plessy lived in Muscatine for about 40 years. Her husband preceded her in death in 1918. There were no children.The aged woman was a member of St. Mathias Catholic church.

Norbert Plessy Dies Suddenly in New Jersey------Norbert L. Plessy, 30, of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Muscatine, died suddenly Thursday afternoon of a heart attack at Union City, N. J. He was unloading a freight train which he had driven to the New Jersey city from Chicago when stricken. He was born in Muscatine, Jan. 14, 1909, the son of Frank J. and Mary Knight Plessy. He married Miss Corrine Scannell in Chicago, Nov. 11, 1934. The widow survives, together with two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Bernick and Mrs. Howard Carl, both of Muscatine. PROSPER PLESSY----- DEATH COMES TO PROSPER PLESSY ------------ AGED MAN DIED LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ------------ Demise Was Hastened By Accident Which He Suffered Several Days Ago---- Born in France ------------ Prosper Plessy passed away late yesterday afternoon at his home on Hershey avenue after having been ill for several years. His death was hastened by a severe fall which he suffered days ago when he sustained a ruptured blood vessel from which a hemorrage resulted. Mr. Plessy's condition gradually became weaker during the past three days and the end came at 5:15 o'clock yesterday. Prosper Plessy was a native of France, having been born at Belford on February 10, 1838. At the age of eight years,he came to this country with his parents, who almost immediately made their home in Muscatine. Since that time he had continued to reside in this city until the death came yesterday. On April 28, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Dubard, of Canada. Four of the six children born to this happy couple survive. They are Mrs. William Fletcher, of Letts, Mrs. Earl Thompson, of Douglas, Oklahoma; Mrs. Frank Behres and Frank Plessy of this city. The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning from St. Mary's church and interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery. Rev.J. I. Grieser will have charge of the services.

Edward G. Plett Dies Suddenly; Rites Monday---Edward G. Plett, 73, resident here for the past 16 years, died at his home, 1113 Orchard avenue at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Death was sudden, caused by a heart ailment. The son of Henry and Ida Ehrecke Plett, he was born on a farm near Blue Grass on June 6, 1880. He married Carrie C. Kautz in March, 1905, and she preceded him in death. His marriage to Henrietta Wunder took place on April 16, 1913. Mr. Plett operated a grocery store in Blue Grass for 20 years and later operated a grocery market in Pleasant Prairie for 16 years before retiring. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of Wilton lodge, No. 167, A. F. and A. M. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Henrietta Plett of Muscatine; two sons, Harold H. Plett of Eldridge, Ia., and Henry E. Plett of Muscatine; a daughter, Mrs. Marie D. Franklin of Muscatine; a brother, Ernest F. Plett of Blue Grass; a sister, Mrs. L. H. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. --- Mr. POTTER was born Oct. 29, 1958, in Muscatine, the son of Harold W. and Charlotte R. HOLIDAY-POTTER. He married Kathleen M. ALBAUGH on Nov. 29, 1958 in Tipton. --- He taught school at Wilton Elementary for 6 years. He worked at ALCOA for 27 and a half years as a material expeditor and a maintenance engineer. After retiring from ALCOA, he worked at Wilson’s Tru Value.--- Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Muscatine; two daughters, Melissa ROSE and her husband, Barry, of Raleigh, N.C. and Noelle DIERDORFF and her husband, Mark, of Napperville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Jason, Matthew and Alyssa DIERDORFF; and his mother, Charlotte POTTER of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his father.

POTTER, former Muscatine resident, who met death Sunday morning in an automobile accident near Donnellson, Ia. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant. --- Mr. POTTER, who had operated the POTTER Drug Store at Mt. Pleasant for the past 20 years, had lived here in his younger years, prior to engaging in business at Mt. Pleasant. He was born March 6, 1917 at Lone Tree, being a son of Dr. and Mrs. W. W. POTTER. He received his education at the University of Iowa. He married Elberta DEAN of Wapello in 1935. --- Surviving are his wife and two children and his mother, all of Mt. Pleasant; and two brothers, Dr. John POTTER of Muscatine and Mason W. POTTER of Glendale, Calif. --- Mr. POTTER’s death was one of two resulting from motor vehicle accidents Sunday in Iowa. He was thrown from his car after it had apparently failed to make a turn on highway No. 218 about two miles south of Donnellson.

Death of John Powell.- John Powell, an old resident of Drury township, in Illinois, died last night at 6 o'clock from the effects of a blow received on the head last Tuesday. He was assisting in butchering and a pole fell, striking him on the head with such force as to render him unconscious, he never regained consciousness and last night silently passed away. Mr. Powell was about 72 years of age. He was born in Pennsylvania, but came west when a young man and had been a resident of Drury township for 35 years. For a number of years his eyesight had been very defective; in fact, he was almost blind, but nevertheless was quite vigorous and did many things which would seem to be practically impossible for him to do. He leaves a wife three daughters and five sons. The time of the funeral has not been set but will be sometime the first of next week an announcement of the exact time will be made later.

Vaughn was a member of the Illinois Society of Arborists and the International Society of Arborists. He enjoyed coaching his children in sports, traveling, visiting with everybody, working, and being in the outdoors. Ione Prescott----- MOLINE, Ill. - Ione D. Prescott, 84, Moline, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, Moline. Mrs. Prescott was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Muscatine, the daughter of Walter and Cecelia Johansen Herget. She married Keith Prescott Aug. 11, 1964, in Carthage, Ill. He preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1985. She was the personnel manager at the Rock Island Arsenal for 38 years, retiring in 1984. She did all of the hiring for the Arsenal. She also ran the Summer Hire Program which employed some 300 youths every summer. She was also in charge of sending military overseas from the arsenal. She was a very caring and loving person who kept in touch with many of those whom she hired. She continued to get birthday cards from many of those that she hired years ago. In 1964, she was elected the first Rock Island Arsenal Queen. Survivors include a daughter, Gail (Couch) Bratton and husband Harold of Moline; grandchildren, Amy Bragg and husband Todd and Todd Bratton, all of Atlanta, Ga., and Jon Bratton and wife Diana and Katie Giron and husband Alex, all of Tampa, Fla.; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was educated in a rural school in Cedar County and Tipton High School and later graduated from cosmetology school in Des Moines in 1942. She lived in Des Moines from 1942-95, when she moved to West Liberty. She was a member of East Side Evangelical Free Church, Des Moines, and the Eastern Star. She was also a life-member of the Royal Neighbors. She loved to take care of her garden and to tend to her flowers. She also loved cooking and worked in her later years at Valley View Nursing Home, Des Moines, as a cook. Survivors include three stepchildren, John Puderbaugh and wife Sheryl of East Peru, Lois Bird and husband Gary of Iowa City and Stephen Puderbaugh and wife Deb of Candia, N.H.; a brother, Kenneth Siders and wife Charlotte of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Ruth Chelf of West Liberty; a sister-in-law, Jo Siders of Lone Tree; a brother-in-law, Lee Highly of Maquoketa; 12 stepgrandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Earl; two sisters, Edith Fulwider and Arlene Highly; and a nephew, Jim Siders. -----Submitters' Note: No Relation.

Miss Zada Pugh, 90, who lived at 325 East 29th street, Davenport died Sunday at the Davenport nursing home.--- Funeral service will be held at the Fairbanks funeral home. The day and time will be announced later. Burial will be in High Prairie cemetery.--- The daughter of Jonathan and Harriett Baker Pugh, Miss Pugh was born .Jan. 15, 1872, in the Muscatine area. A resident of Mount Pleasant for 50 years, she had lived in Davenport for the last three. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are a niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Arundel, St. Paul, Minn.

I. N. PURCELL, OLD VETERAN, IS DEAD-----PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT AT HOME IN PARK PLACE-------Has Been Resident in County Since Early Fifties-------Death Much Regretted by Many in County-------I. N. Purcell, an old resident of the county and an old veteran, died last night at his home in Park Place at 10:30 0'clock. Death was due to stomach troubles, from which Mr. Purcell had suffered for years, a total collapse yesterday noon being a forerunner of his death. The deceased has been a resident of this county and has been identified with the interests and progress of the county since the early fifties and his death will be universally regretted throughout the county by his large circle of friends and relatives. He was known as a thoroughly straightforward and honest man, respected and well thought of by all with whom he came in contact.-------Member of 35th Regiment-------Mr. Purcell was 69 years, 2 months and 22 days of age. He was born in Lawrence county, Ind., and came to Muscatine county during the year 1852 and has lived here since that time. He was a member of Company B. Thirty-fifth Iowa Volunteers, and served his country faithfully until honorably discharged. He was united in marriage during 1857 to Miss Sarah Hewitt. Four children were born to them---Warren, Isabella, Addie and Sherman. Mrs. Purcell died in 1872 and he was again united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Betty, who, still survives him. He was an earnest member of the Methodist church and his life has been one that one could follow as an example. The funeral will be held at the First Methodist church Sunday afternoon, and will be in charge of Rev. Stoddard. Interment will take place in the family lot in Greenwood.

HENRIETTA BEATTY PURSELL-------MRS. I. N. PURSELL DIES AT DODGE HOME-------AGED WOMAN CALLED BY DEATH LAST NIGHT-------Funeral Will Be Held at 1 O'clock Tomorrow, Afternoon---Interment in Greenwood-------Mrs. I. N. Pursell, a resident of Bloomington township until about eight years ago, passed away about 7 o'clock last night at the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. George Dodge, on Woodlawn avenue. Mrs. Pursell had been ailing for the past four years, although it was not iuntil the latter part of December that her condition became serious. Senility is assigned as the cause of her death. Henrietta Beatty was born in Canada, October 8, 1838. She came to this county with her parents when a child and made her home in this vicinity ever since. Following the death of her husband about eight years ago she moved to this city and resided in Park Place, but for the past four years she had been making her home with her step-daughter, Mrs. George Dodge, at whose home she died. She was an active member of the Methodist church. She is survived by three step-children. They are Sherman Pursell of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Addie Craig, of Garden City, Neb., and Mrs. Dodge, of this city. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock. The Rev.A. H. Barker of the Park Avenue M. E. church will officiate and the remains will be interred in Greenwood cemetery. According to present arrangements the funeral will be held from the home.
