Edna Oakes----- MUSCATINE - Edna F. Oakes, 86, of Muscatine, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Morning Sun Care Center in Morning Sun. Services will be Wednesday at the Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Ostrem of Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Oakes was born on June 13, 1913, in Illinois City, Ill., the daughter of John and Mary Johnson Hayes. She married Virgil Oakes. She loved gardening. She had a beautiful flower garden and a large vegetable garden. Before retiring, she was a cook at Ina Mae's Restaurant. Survivors include a daughter, Cherille Oakes of Muscatine, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil on July 11, 1971; and two brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Oakes 2011 1st Ave., died at 8:30 Sunday morning in Muscatine General Hospital following a short illness. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. The former Tennessee resident was born May 24, 1907 in Andersonville, Tenn., as the son of Thomas Henry and Sarah Belle Milton Oakes. He married Edna F. Hayes Nov. 26, 1932 in Rock Island, Illinois. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Cherille Oakes, at home; his father, La Follette, Tenn. Preceding him in death was his mother.--------Additional information from submitter: "THE MUSCATINE JOURNAL", Muscatine, Iowa, November 29, 1932 Miss Edna Hayes and Virgil Oaks, both of Muscatine, were married Saturday at 2 P.M. in the office of Justice of the Peace A. M. Kloye. Samuel Hayes attended the couple. The bridegroom is a farmer.----- There is a Virgil Oakes in Moscow Township page 10 age 23 born Tennessee and Single living in the household of George Middaugh and he was listed as a servant.

PASSES AWAY AT THE HOME OF HIS BROTHER ---------------------- JACOB OAKS, FORMERLY A RESIDENT OF MUSCATINE, DIES ---------------- Was Visiting With His Brother, Jesse Oakes, at Lowe Run - Remains Taken to Missouri for Burial. ---------- Jacob Oakes, of Prescott, Kan., formerly of Muscatine, who had been visiting his brother, Jesse Oakes at Lowe Run, passed away last evening after a few days' illness. Palpitation of the heart and Bright's disease were given as the cause of his death. He had just returned from a trip to Oklahoma, and was spending a few weeks here, when he took ill. It was thought he was recovering nicely, and his son, Phillip, who was with him, left for Prescott, expecting his father to follow in a few days. Mr. Oakes became worse yesterday, and died last night. The body will be taken to Eagleville, Mo., for interment beside his wife, who preceded him in death three years in death. Jacob Oakes was born in Somerset, Pa., in 1836, being 71 years old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa and settled in Seventy-Six township in 1843. Along in 1885 he removed with his family to Missouri, and later to Kansas. Besides his brother, Jesse of this county, he leaves two sons and one daughter, Philip of Fulton; Lellyette of Eagleville, Mo., and Effie of Eagleville.

JESSE OAKS SUCCUMBS TO DIABETES---- Home at Lowe Run, But Death Came at Winter Apartments Here-- Married 58 Years.---- Mrs. Jesse Oaks, 77, of the Lowe Run community, prominent resident of Muscatine county for more than 25 years died at the Oaks winter apartment 327 East Second street, at 2 o'clock this morning. Diabetes and other complications caused her death. Mr. and Mrs. Oaks recently celebrated their fifty-eight anniversary. The wedding date, since the golden wedding was celebrated, has been the occasion for annual family parties. Besides her husband Mrs. Oaks is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ada Heldman of Pasadena, Calif., and Mrs. L. M. Neyes of near Muscatine, two sisters, Mrs. D. B. Addleman of this city and Mrs. Alvie Rice of Davenport, and one brother J. S. Bowlby, of Conesville. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending word from relatives.--- Note: She died Jan. 1, 1925

MRS. EDWARD OBERHAUS DIES-------Succumbs To Complications Sunday at Her East Hill Home------Sunday afternoon occurred the death of Mrs. Edward Dixon Oberhaus, at her home, 1510 East Fifth street, the cause being bilious fever and a complication of diseases. Deceased had been sick scarcely a week and until last Saturday it was not thought her illness would result fatally. Mrs. Oberhaus was May Dixon before she was married a few years ago and was one of East Hill's most estimable young people, being a regular attendant of the First M. E. Church, and her many good qualities made her most popular with all who knew her. She has always made Muscatine her home and has always been highly respected for her generous and kind nature. Mrs. Oberhaus was born September 17, 1878, and is survived by her mother Amanda Dixon; her husband, Edward Oberhaus, and two children, Floyd and Harold. She is also survived by four brothers and a sister, who are C. H., F. H., G. W., Willie, and Ida Dixon. The funeral services will probably be held from the First M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Dr. C. L. Stafford having charge of the services.

Death Summons E. J. Oberhaus; Funeral Monday------E. J. Oberhaus, 67, of 410 Park avenue, died at 1:15 a.m. today at Hershey hospital after an extended illness. The son of Henry and Sophia Rockledge Oberhaus, he was born Nov. 19, 1874, in Muscatine and lived here all of his life. He was twice married, first in 1897 to Margaret Dixon, who preceded him in death in 1903, and the second time January 9, 1919, to Mrs. Luella Parry Newman. He had been retired for some time, having been formerly employed as a button cutter and in a box factory. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. Surviving are the wife; two sons, Floyd Oberhaus, of Burlington, Iowa, and Harold Oberhaus of Muscatine; two stepsons, Henry Newman, of Muscatine and John Newman of West Liberty; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Lydia Miller, of Muscatine; three brothers, George and Julius Oberhaus, both of Muscatine, and Albert Oberhaus, of Aurora, Illinois; a sister, Mrs. Helen Aller, of Davenport; two grandchildren, Robert Oberhaus of the U.S.S.Brooks and Jack Oberhaus of Burlington; three step grandchildren, Virginia Miller of Muscatine and John and James Newman of West Liberty. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, two brothers, Henry and Will Oberhaus and two sisters, Phoenia Stromer and Mary Dixon. FRED OBERHAUS DIES AT HOME------Fred Oberhaus, one of Muscatine's best known business men died last night at 10:30 o'clock at his home, 516 West Eighth Street. Blood poisoning is given as the cause of his death. He was 29 years of age. He was born August 26, 1889 in this city and resided here his entire life. When 16 years of age, he entered the employ of McColm & Co., and for 16 years was considered as one of the company's most valuable employees. Four years ago, with Edw. Klein of this city, now in military service, he entered into the transfer and delivery business under the firm name of Klein and Oberhaus Special Delivery Service. About a year ago he took over the business of the firm himself and continued as its active head until recently when he contracted blood poisoning. To survive he leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Oberhaus, one sister Bertha and three brothers, Norbert Oberhaus, at home, William Oberhaus with the American Expeditionary Forces in France and Harry Oberhaus on his way overseas. Funeral services will be held Monday morning from the late residence, the Rev. J. O. Grieser of St. Mary's church to officiate. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.

Mrs. Gertrude H. Oberhaus, 76, 117 W. 3rd St., died early Thursday evening at Muscatine General Hospital following a brief illness. Services will be held. Saturday at St. Mathias Church. Burial will be in St. Marys' Cemetery. Visitation will be today at the Riley Funeral Home. Gertrude Oberhaus was born June 17, 1903, in Muscatine, the daughter of Patrick and Emma Reynolds Haney. Her marriage to Harold C. Oberhaus took place Sept. 9, 1924, in Muscatine. He died Jan. 13, 1970. She was a member of St. Mathias Church, Women of the Moose, Lady Elks and the BPW. She was also president of the Clark House Residents' Assoc. Mrs. Oberhaus had worked as school librarian at Jefferson and Lincoln school for over 12 years. Survivors include one son, E. Patrick of Muscatine; one granddaughter; and one sister, Mrs. Harry (Myrtle) Howell of Muscatine.

He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic church in Davenport. Mr. Oberhaus was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and Muscatine Power Boat club. He had been an employee of the maintenance department of the water division of the Muscatine Power and Water for more than 40 years prior to retirement four years ago. Surviving are his wife; one son, E. Patrick Oberhaus, Cedar Falls; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one brother and his parents. He was married Aug. 31, 1921, at St. Mary's church, to Ruby McElrea. Mr. Oberhaus was a member of St. Mary's church, and a charter member of Muscatine Post 27 of the American Legion. (Jeanne) Carroll of Andrews, Texas; a brother, Norbert Oberhaus of Letts; one sister, Miss Bertha Oberhaus of Clinton; and six grandchildren. Death of Henry Oberhaus, Sr.-------At 10 o'clock this morning occurred the death of Henry Oberhaus, at the family residence on Boone street, after suffering ten days from the ravages of pneumonia. The deceased was a native of Germany, having been born in that country 66 years ago the 6th of last March. He came to this country forty years ago and has been a residence of Muscatine for many years, being widely known in the city and much respected as a citizen of worth and sterling qualities. The decedent is survived by a wife and seven children, who mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. The children are: Mrs. Joseph Stromer, Henry, Will, George, Julius, Edward and Albert Oberhaus, Mrs. John Aller, Mrs. C. H. Dixon, of Cedar Rapids. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from the house, the ceremony beginning at 2 o'clock.

EAST HILL MAN DIES AT HOME-----HENRY H. OBERHAUS, WELL KNOWN PIONEER, IS DEAD------Born in Muscatine 56 Years Ago-----Had Been Practically an Invalid For Many Years------One of the city's pioneer residents, Henry H. Oberhaus, passed away at his home, 1300 East Fifth Street, this morning at about 3:30 o'clock after a lingering illness. Mr. Oberhaus had been an invalid for a period of many years and had been confined to his bed since October. He was 56 years of age and a lifelong resident of Muscatine. He was well known about the city, having for several years been elevator operator in the Hershey bank building until his confinement to his home. Born in City------Henry H. Oberhaus was born in Muscatine, September 18, 1860, and has since made his home here. On April 29, 1903, he was united in marriage with Martha Krone, also of Muscatine, to which union one child was born, this dying in infancy. Beside his widow he leaves to survive five brothers, Albert, Edward, William, George and Julian, all of this city; and two sisters, Mrs. Benjamin Stromer of Burlingame, Kansas, and Mrs. John Aller of Davenport. The funeral services have not been made pending the arrival of relatives.

Mr. Oberhaus was employed at Thatcher Plastic Packaging; was a member of the Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife; a brother, Kenneth of Muscatine, a sister, Mrs. John (Mary Mildred) Linder, Mercer County, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Oberhaus was a Bloomington Township farmer. Survivors include his wife; one son, Marvin of Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. James (Marilyn) King of Muscatine; three grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. John (Mildred) Linder of New Boston, Illinois. One brother and one grandson preceded him in death.

She was born Dec. 8 1882, in Middletown, Illinois, coming to Muscatine from Illinois when a young girl. She was married to Julius Oberhaus Nov. 23, 1904, in Muscatine. She was a member of St. Mary's church. Surviving are the husband, Julius Oberhaus; two sons, Kenneth Oberhaus and Howard Oberhaus; one daughter, Mrs. John Linder; a sister, Mrs. Fred Reinsager; a brother, Jesse Benedict; a half-brother, Henry Benedict; and three grandchildren, all of Muscatine. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Benedict, one daughter and two half brothers. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's church with the Rev. N. J. Her marriage to Edward Oberhaus took place Jan. 9, 1918, at Muscatine. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal church. Survivors include four sons, John L Newman, Sr., Atalissa, Henry P. Newman, Muscatine, Floyd Oberhaus, Oswego, Wash., and Harold Oberhaus, Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Harvey Koll, Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Hawker, Muscatine; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands, three brothers and two sisters.

MRS. MARTHA MARY OBERHAUS, 80, of 514 Spring Street, a resident of the community for 78 years, died at 8:15 p.m . Friday at her home after an illness of several weeks. She was born Sept. 9, 1879 at Richmond, Ind., a daughter of F. C. and Emma Vodegal Krone. She was married to Henry H. Oberhaus April 28, 1903 at Muscatine. Mrs. Oberhaus was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Miriam Rebekah lodge and the Past Noble Grands group. She had been employed by the Hawkeye Pearl Button Co. for about 50 years. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Tina Anderson, of Muscatine and two nieces, Mrs. Hazel Painter of Muscatine and Mrs. Margaret Rickert of Long Beach, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son in infancy, her parents and one brother. The body is at the Ralph G. Wittich Funeral Home where services will be conducted by the Rev. William H. Kettlitz. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery.

He was a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church and the St. Malachy Parish in Ardon. He was a past member of the Eastern Iowa Light & Power Cooperative board of directors. He was co-owner of Oberhaus Brothers Market until 1952 and later was engaged in farming. He moved to the Letts community in 1963 and farmed there until 1976. Survivors include a son, John F. of Letts; a daughter, Mary Ann Oberhaus of Huntington, Calif.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha Oberhaus of Fort Madison. He is preceded in death by his wife in 1965 and three brothers.

Oberhaus, 77, who died at Hershey hospital at 10:23 a.m. Monday following a four weeks' illness with complications. His home was at 1243 East Fifth street. The Rev. J. J. Born in Muscatine on May 2, 1873, Mr. Oberhaus was the son of Henry and Sophia Wroekledge Oberhaus. He was a lifelong resident of Muscatine. He married the former Lorena Benedict in Muscatine on Nov. 23, 1904. Mr. Oberhaus had been employed by the Barry machine shop but had retired. He was a member of St. Mary's church and of the Modern Woodmen. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Oberhaus of Muscatine and Howard Oberhaus at home; one daughter, Mrs. John Linder of Eliza, Illinois; and four grandchildren. Edward O'Brien, 82 died at 8 o'clock last evening at his home 302 Gilbert street of complications resulting from old age. His health had been poor for the past year.----- Mr. O'Brien was born in New York City, 24 August 1843 the son of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Brien. Enlisting in the federal army at the age of 19 he saw three years of actual service in the Civil War, and passed 11 months, until the close of the war, in the Andersonville Prison, having been captured while on a scouting trip. After the war he moved to Illinois, living in Rock Island and Mercer counties untill 1877, when he came to Muscatine where he lived there the remainder of his life. In 1866 he married Miss Mary Jane Brewer in Muscatine. He was a member of the Shelby Norman post, G. A. R. Of the seven children, three survive him: Mrs. William D. Bierman, Muscatine; Mrs. Mollie Bliss, Buda Ill., and William H. O'Brien of this city. He also leaves his wife. Three children died in infancy and one daughter, Anna Margaret O'Brien died 23 February 1923 in Muscatine. Funeral services will be held from the home, 302 Gilbert street tomorrow afternoon conducted by the Rev. E. A. Benzinger. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery.

Although Mrs. O'Brien was an aged woman and somewhat of an invalid, her death was entirely unexpected. She had attained the ripe old age of 78 years and was a devout member of the Catholic church. She was well known in Muscatine and many of her old friends will be sorry to learn of her death. Mrs. Elizabeth O'Brien was born in Ireland, February 16, 1833, coming to this country when but a young girl. She settled in Tipton, Iowa, and was there married to Patrick O'Brien who died shortly after moving to this city, 35 years ago. Four children preceded her in death. They were : William, Charles, Josie and Harry. She is survived by three children, as follows: Mrs. Anna Eaton and Michael, of this city, and Edward, who has not yet been located. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at St.Mary's church. Father J. I., Grieser will celebrate mass. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.

O'Brien Dies, 4 Hurt After Car Strikes Tree at Second St., Park Ave. ----------------- Richard O'Brien 21, veteran of World War No. 2, who resided at 1,000 Earl avenue, is dead, and four of his companions are being treated for injuries, as the result of an automobile accident at the intersection of East Second street and Park avenue which occurred shortly after midnight Thursday. The injured are; Ivan Snider, 22, of 1307 Nebraska street, severe fracture of the upper jaw, teeth knocked from both the upper and lower jaws, compound fracture of the right ankle, severe gash over the left eye and knee cap torn from the bone. Condition serious. Dulcia D. Goddard, 19, of 507 Spring street, broken right elbow and other minor injuries. Mrs. Juanita White, 20 of 514 East Sixth street, broken right thigh and compound fracture of the right leg. Merle Hurlbut, 22, 302 Stewart road, minor injuries.----- Crashes Into Tree----- Police said the accident occurred when the car driven by Snider, with the other four as passengers, failed to make the curve at the top of the hill as it was travelling east. The car struck the curb and then crashed into a tree just beyond the curb. Impact of the crash nearly demolished the machine. The motor was driven back into the front seat, it was reported. Snider and O'Brien, in the front seat, were thrown into the steering wheel and against the dash board. O'Brien died at Hershey hospital at 6:35 a. m. today. Snider whose injuries are reported serious, and Mrs. White are still under treatment at the hospital. Mrs. White condition is not serious officials said. Dulcia Goddard and Hurlbut escaped with minor injuries, police said.----- Says Hurlbut Fled----- According to the police, Hurlbut made his way from the accident scene before police arrived but other passengers in the car said he had been with the group at the time of the accident. He was picked up a short time after near his home and the officers said he denied being in the car. Dr. C. P. Phillips, county, coroner, who attended the injured and Sheriff Fred B. Nesper, made an investigation of the accident this morning but were undecided at noon whether an inquest would be conducted. The Crash occurred on the curve at the top of East Second street which has been the scene of scores of accidents during the past few years.------ Ask Traffic Light----- The city council only Thursday night adopted a resolution requesting the Iowa State Highway commission to install a traffic light at the corner, in view of the extreme hazards there and the numerous accidents which have occurred at the intersection recently. On many previous occasions the council had also sought to have the highway commission install more adequate safeguards, but without results. Richard DeWayne O'Brien the son of Mrs. Edna O'Brien Blake was born in Muscatine Jul 4, 1924, spending his entire life here. He served in the United States navy for almost four years, with 39 months of the time spent overseas. He received his honorable discharge from the service on Nov. 6, 1945.----- Plan Military Funeral----- He was a member of the Musserville Methodist Church and of the John Harold Kemble post Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his mother, his step-father, Clifford Blake, two sisters, Mrs. Audrey Furnas and Mrs. Betty Venghous, and two uncles, Lloyd and Lester Swank all of Muscatine. Death was caused by tuberculosis, the young man having suffered with this for the past three years. Arthur Odell was born in Ft. Leavenwirth, Kan., in 1891, and resided in that place prior to coming here two years ago. He was employed in the local button factory here and was a member of the local Button Worker's union. He is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hughes, of this city, two sisters, and one brother as follows : Miss Stella Odell and Mrs. Olla Pate, both of Ft. EAST HILL RESIDENT SUDDENLY STRICKEN.... Henry O'Dell, a well-known resident of East Hill, suffered a fatal stroke of apoplexy at his home at 1236 Dale street, today. He was stricken at about noon and when discovered by members of the household was unconscious. Mr. O'Dell suffered two strokes last spring and since that time has been in poor health although not confined to his bed. Only a short time ago while riding in a wagon near his home he was thrown to the ground suffering a dislocated shoulder and since that time was incapacitated. Mr. O'Dell during the early part of his life travelled extensively, having visited every portion of the world. During his later years he narrated many interesting incidents which marked his travel. He came to this city about twenty-five years ago, and has made his home here ever since. He is survived by his wife, one son, Fred O'Dell of Kansas City, Mo., and one daughter, Mrs. Josephine DeCamp, of Arlington, Texas. Several sisters also survive him. DeAnne L. O'Donnell, 41, went home to be with the Lord on the evening of May 18, 2006. Booie, as she was called by her family and many friends, was born on Dec 22, 1964 at Lamar, CO., the daughter of Ron and Maggie Goody Christy of West Liberty, and Charles O'Donnell of Cedar Rapids. --- Booie loved her family and friends, nature and her pets. Three years ago, she fought and won her battle with breast cancer, but her valiant effort to overcome Alpha 1 - Anti-trypsin Deficency was not to be. --- Left to mourn her passing are her parents, three brothers, Dennis of West Branch; Dan of West Liberty; David and his wife, Dena, of Wellman. She also has two step-brothers, Rod (Ronda) Christy of West Liberty and Mark (Diane) Christy, of Springdale, AR., and three step-sisters; Pam (Scott) Fordyce of Altoona; Ronda Spilger of Iowa City; and Marsha (Tim) Furlong of Muscatine, along with many nieces, nephews, Aunts and Uncles. --- Her ashes will be taken to Klein Cemetery in rural Muscatine Co. for a private burial, but her soul is with God. A celebration of her life will be held at First Church United on Saturday, June 3, 2006 in West Liberty. --- Thanks to the wonderful people at Hospice, DeAnne was able to spend her last couple days at home where she was comfortable and was able to pet her cat.

The son of Hiram and Ella Weed Oepping, he was born Aug. 10, 1893, in Muscatine County. His marriage to Eva DeVore took place Oct. 14, 1915, in Muscatine. He was a member of the First Church United and for many years had been a trustee for the Overmann Cemetery in Atalissa. Mr. Oepping had farmed all his life in the Atalissa area before moving to West Liberty in 1972. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Elma) Binggell of Hills; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. One brother and a sister preceded him in death.

Died, at his home in Nichols, January 26, 1894, of general debility, Gamaliel Olds, in his 91st year. The deceased had been seriously ill only since Tuesday night, though he had been for some time suffering from the infirmities of age. The deceased was born in Windham county, Vermont, Nov. 28, 1803. In 1821 he removed to Cuyahoga county,Ohio, and in the spring of 1832 removed to Pickaway county, in the same state, where remained until the spring of 1839, when he removed with his family to Iowa, settling in Pike township, this county, there being then only five other famlies in the township. Here he acquired by entry and purchase 316 acres of land and for a number of years he engaged in farming. He was chosen one of the first justices of the peace in the township in which office he served eleven years. He was also county drainage commissioner for four years. Mr. Olds was married to Minerva Howe in Cuyahoga county, Ohio, April 12, 1826. She shared pioneer life with him and many years afterward, dying January 26, 1876, leaving three children, Almira S. Mills, Minnie H. Cone and Gamaliel W. Mrs. Mills died in 1884. Mrs. Coe lives in Vineland, N. J., and G. W. Olds in Fargo, N. D. There are eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren of the deceased now living. He was married a second time in 1881 to Mrs. Harriet Metcalf..... The funeral took place Saturday,interment being made at Lone Tree.

Peter Olson, 79, proprietor of the Peter Olson Marble and Granite works and one of the oldest men in the monument trade in eastern Iowa, died at his home, 519 East Sixth street at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday. He had been ill with heart trouble the past 18 months. --- Mr. Olson was born in Sodra Wallakru, Skane, Sweden, on Aug. 24, 1857, the son of Ingar and Ola Swenson. He came to America in 1883, going first to Manchester, Delaware county, Iowa, where he resided for 18 months before coming to Muscatine in 1885. He had lived here ever since. --- He entered the monument business in Muscatine, in 1895, and continued in the same location ever since taking active charge of the business until the time of his death, despite ill health. --- Mr. Olson was married to Alcie Redman on May 9, 1889, at St. Mathias rectory in Muscatine by the Rev. Phillip Laurent. His wife died July 3, 1934, and a son, Leo Moyne, died in 1918. --- He was a member of St. Mathias church, and of the Elks and Knights of Pythias lodges. --- Surviving are six children, Alfred, Robert, Stella and Mrs. Meisky, all of Muscatine, Nellie of Oakland, Calf., and Sister Mary Julietta of Des Planes, Ill.; one brother, Andrew P. Olson of Oakland, Calif., a sister, Mrs. Nellie Anderson of Manchester, Wash.; and one grandchild, Kathleen Meisky of Muscatine. Several nieces and nephews survive in Sweden. --- The body is being taken from the Meyers Funeral home this afternoon to the residence at 510 East Sixth street. The rosary will be recited there at 7:30 Thursday night. --- Funeral rites will be conducted at 6 a.m. Friday, with solemn requiem high mass at St. Mathias church. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. W. L. Industrial Mishap kills man------- Robert D. Oppelt 23, 818 1/2 E. 8th St., died early this morning following an industrial accident at the Bandag Plant No. 5 in Muscatine's Progress Park. Details of the accident were unavailable this morning, but hospital personnel were conducting an autopsy. A hospital representative said that Oppelt had suffered multiple injuries, particularly to the chest, but no severe burns. An ambulance was called to the plant shortly after 12:30 a. m. to take Oppelt to the hospital. Public safety officials were not notified of the death. A Bandag representative said that officials were investigating the scene of the accident today. Funeral services for Oppelt have been set for Thursday at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel. Delmar E. Ostrander , 57, died today at his home, 514 Adams street, following an extended illness. The son of Lincoln and Elizabeth Reinhart Ostrander, he was born March 28, 1894 at Muscatine and had lived here all his life. He was married Jan. 2, 1917 to Grace Becke at Muscatine, He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal church and was employed for some time as parts man at the Henderson garage. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Robert E. of Abilene, Texas, Richard N. of Casper, Wyo., James of Muscatine, and William of Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and one daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Barry, Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Funeral services will be held at Friday at the chapel of the Fairbanks Home for Funerals. The Rev. Richard M. Pieper, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal church, will be in charge. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Grace E. Ostrander , 91, 106 E. 6th St., Apt. 712, died Friday at Muscatine General Hospital. Services are Tuesday at the Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Richard Simpson will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is today at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Mrs. Ostrander was born Aug. 12, 1897 in Chicago, a daughter of George and Bertha E. Fassett Becke. She had resided her since 1910. Her marriage to Delmar Earl Ostrander took place Jan. 12, 1917 in Muscatine. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and, the Mus-Quo-Ta Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include four sons, Robert, Richard, James and William E., all of South Carolina; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1951, a daughter, two brothers and a sister.

AUGUST OTHMER---- FOR MANY YEARS WAS IN THE SADDLERY BUSINESS---- Was Veteran of the Civil War and One of the Founders of the German Baptist Church---- August Othmer, one of the older business men of Muscatine, died last night at 8:30 of infirmities of old age. He was in his eightieth years. For many years Mr. Othmer was connected with the Van Nostrand Saddlery company. Mr. Othmer was a native of Germany, born in Gosslar, Hanover, on September 22, 1831. He came to America in 1852, taking up his residence first in Buffalo, N. Y. After living there about two years he came to Rock Island and thence to Muscatine, settling here in 1854. Three years later he was united in marriage to Miss Magdalena Hoffmeister. To this union four children were born, two of whom, together with the mother have passed away. In 1868 Mr. Othmer was again united in marriage to Anna Catherine Quantz. To them twelve children were born, four of them, together with the mother, having preceded him in death. The surviving children are: Henry, of Chicago; Mrs. Sarah Giebel, of this city; August E. Othmer, Mrs. Lillie Hiller, Mrs. Catherine Toborg, Mrs. Lena Borchardt, Edward Otmer, and Mrs. Mabel Dittman, of this city, and Arthur B. Othmer, of Rockford, Ill, and Louis F. Othmer of Burlington, Ia. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren as follows : Mrs. Mildred Glasscock, of Spokane, Wash.; Arthur Giebel, of Rock Island, Ill.; Miss Virginia Othmer, of Chicago, Ill.; Miss and Harold Othmer, of Rockford, Ill.; Miss Elnora and Melvin Othmer, of Burlington, and Mrs. Edna Kelley, Misses Henrietta Hiller, Lillian and Katherine Borchardt, and Ralph Toborg and August E. Dittman, of this city.---- Member of 35th Iowa---- In 1862 he enlisted as a soldier of the blue in Company C, 35th Iowa volunteers and served honorably until the close of the war. After returning from the war he was employed in the shipping department of the J. Rubleman and Co., Saddlery. He worked there for years and finally worked up to the vice presidency of the present firm of the Van Nostrand Saddlery company, from which he retired in 1903.---- An Organizer of Church---- He was one of the organizers of the German Baptist church in Muscatine and his membership in this organization dates from the beginning of the church in Muscatine. He served as deacon for many years and the last few years as honorary deacon. He was also an old time member of Eagle Lodge, No. 10, A. O. U. W., and was also a member of the Shelby Norman Post G. A. R.

William J. O’TOOLE, 70, longtime resident of Muscatine county, died at Bellevue hospital. His home was on a farm north of Letts. --- Mr. O’TOOLE, the son of Patrick O’TOOLE and Mary GRIFFIN-O’TOOLE, was born in Muscatine county March 19, 1882 and resided here his entire life with the exception of 10 years spent in Colorado. He was a farmer by vocation and was a member of St. Malachy’s church of Ardon.--- Surviving are the following brothers and sisters, John of Cornish, Colo., Molly of Hammond, Ind., Agatha and Margaret at home and sister M. Annette, B.V.M., of Hawaii.. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death. --- Requiem High Mass will be celebrated ON Tuesday at St. Malachey’s church at Ardon with the Rev. E. J. O’Hair in charge. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Riley Funeral Home of Muscatine. Burial will be in the Ardon Cemetery.

Stockton, Nov. 6 – Miss Hilda Otto, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Otto of Stockton died at her home here Sunday, after a week’s illness of Spanish influenza.--- Her death came as a complete shock to the community. Miss Otto was born in Muscatine county, November 2, 1903, and had resided in the community during practically her entire life. Besides her parents she is survived by her brother, Elmer, in service at Camp Dodge, who is seriously ill with the same disease, and two brothers, Herbert and Willis, and one sister, Esther, at home.

Fred OTTO, 58, died suddenly of a heart ailment Wednesday at his home on rural route 4, Bloomington township. --- Mr. OTTO was born June 12, 1881 in Muscatine county, the son of Charles and Anna Elizabeth BLOOMER-OTTO, and resided here his entire life. He married Emma EISNER, Oct. 18, 1906 in Muscatine, and she is the only immediate survivor. --- Mr. OTTO was prominent in work of the Muscatine county Farm Bureau, serving as it s president for nearly two years and for a number of years as a member of the board of directors.--- Funeral services will be held Sunday.----------------- (written in ink; Buried 25 June 1939)--- Funeral services for Fred OTTO were held at 1 p.m. at the home and at !:30 p.m. at the First Methodist church Sunday, with Dr. L. Catharine NEWHART- OURS--- Mrs. Catharine Ours, was born in Allen Tp., Nothampton Co., Pa, on the 25th day of Nov. A.D., 1820 and died April 26th 1885. Aged 64 year 5 mo and 1 day. Mrs. Ours was one of nine children born to JOHN and EVA REBER NEWHART, and was joined in marriage with JOSEPH OURS, the 17th, of April 1838. In the year 1850 the family moved to Iowa where they have ever since resided. Her life has been that of an exemplary Christian, a faithful wife and loving mother. To Mrs. Ours was born nine children, three sons, and six daughters. One daughter preceded her to the spirit world. Five daughters and two sons were present to witness the last solemn pubic rites to her memory, Her mother survives her and is 84 years of age Thirteen weeks ago today we followed her husband to his last resting place and deposit his body in the silent earth. Tuesday, April 28th , we followed her to the same resting place, and laid her by his side. The grave has their bodies, but we hope the heaven has three spirits. May they sleep together, through eternity in the kingdoms everlasting light.-----Witon newpaper ..April 30, 1885--- The Messers. Ours and their sisters who reside abroad, being summoned by the announcment of the sudden death of the mother, all execpt George arrived in time to be present at her funeral.---- Addtional information.--- Ours, will also be found as Our, Auer etc.---- Newhart is also spelled NEUHARD , pluis multipe other spelling.---- Her children were JOHN H. He married Nettie Putt here on Aug. 6, 1910. Surviving are the widow, two sisters, Mrs. Annie Rynes, Ontario, Wis., (Wisconsin) and Mrs. Mary Sake, Hillsburo, Wis.
