AWFUL DISPENSATION OF PROVIDENCE.--- A Young Man Struck Dead by Lightning.---Among all the terrible calamities that have shocked our community during the past six months probably the most appalling was the instantaneous death of MR. THOMAS D. MOORE by a stroke of lightning, last evening. During the prevalence of a heavy storm, about 7 1/2 o'clock, Mr. Moore was passing near Ninth Street, on Ogilvie Hill, when he was thus called from time to eternity. Several persons living near saw the thunder-bolt descend and noticed Mr. Moore fall, but supposing that a stump near him had been struck and that he was only stunned no one went immediately to the spot. During an intermission of the storm, soon after, a boy named Orlando Walters repaired to the scene, found Mr. Moore lying on the ground, face downwards, and apparently lifeless. The lad immediately hastened for assistance and on examining the body life proved to be extinct. The face and most of the body were of a dark discoloration but no marks of violence were discovered except an abrasion on the nose, doubtless occasioned by falling. The remains were carried to the late home of the deceased, in North Muscatine. This morning the discolorations on the body somewhat defined the course of the lightning, indicating that it started on the left arm and after traversing it from the shoulder downwards jumped to the abdomen and took an upward course, passing off at the head.---- Deceased was one of the regular policemen of this city during a year prior to his death, and in that capacity was a vigilant officer. He was an industrious young man, highly esteemed by the community for his integrity, peaceful but social disposition and moral habits. He was a member in good standing of the M. E. Church. He was about thirty-one years of age, and leaves a young grief-stricken wife and two children to lament his untimely end. The funeral services, Rev. W. F. Cowles officiating, were held at three o'clock this afternoon.

On The Street Last Evening---Apoplexy The Cause---News Of The Day Around Town---'A SUDDEN SUMMONS'----Ed Moylan Falls Dead on the Street------Last evening at five minutes to five o'clock as Ed Moylan was standing at the corner of Second and Walnut Streets, near Vanatta & Mundt's implement house, he suddenly fell to the ground and immediately expired, apoplexy being the direct cause of his death. He had just come from his home to resume his duties as motorman on the electric car line, but before the time came for him to go to work the summons came which called him away from all earthly scenes and labor. He was carried to his home near the corner of Sycamore and Third streets and the shock of bringing home to his beloved wife the dear lifeless form can be better imagined than described. But kind neighbors were there to comfort her in her awful affliction and give all the aid that lies in the power of human hands to give. James Edward Moylan was born in Goshen township, Muscatine County, on May 2nd, 1865, and was the oldest son of Patrick Moylan, one of the oldest settlers of the county. He was reared on his father's farm and received his education in the public schools of the county. In February of 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Feely and to them has been born one child. About two years ago he moved to this city and took a position with the old street car company and when the electric line was established he was retained and has remained in their service ever since, being one of the most careful and painstaking motorman of the line. He was well liked by his associates and held in the highest esteem by his employers and his sudden death falls like a pall on all who knew him. The cars to-day are tastily draped in mourning in his honor. He is survived by a wife and child, father and mother, ten brothers and six sisters. He was a member of Muscatine Camp, No. 106, Modern Woodmen of America. The funeral will be held at the house tomorrow morning at 7 o'clock. Interment at Cedar Valley, in Cedar County.

PIONEER COUNTY RESIDENT DIES.---- PHILIP MURPHY SUCCUMBS TO ILLS OF OLD AGE.---- Came To Muscatine in the Fifties----Was Pioneer Wagonmaker---Mason for Fifty Years.----- Muscatine lost another pioneer in the death of Philip Murphy, a resident of this community for more than sixty-four years, which occurred at his home at 2806 Mulberry avenue at 6:30 o'clock this morning. Death resulted from senility and came in his ninetieth year. Mr. Murphy broke virgin sod in Muscatine county with a team of oxen. He was born June 28, 1829, near Albany N. Y., a son of James Louis and Susan (Damph) Murphy, who were also natives of Albany and spent the greater part of their lives there. About 1838 the family removed to Ohio and both the father and mother died in Muskingum county. Philip Murphy spent the first seven years of his life in his native city, after which he and two brothers lived in a Shaker village eight miles northwest of Albany until he was 18 years of age. In the fall of 1848 he went to Ohio and followed wagonmaking, at a point eight miles east of Coshocton, where he remained for two years. He then returned to Albany, where he worked at his trade until the fall of 1851. He secured employment in a carriage shop at Dresden, O., where he worked until the spring of 1854, when he came to Muscatine on April 16. He entered land in Orono township, Muscatine county, recording the entry at Iowa City. He secured forty acres in this manner and also purchased fifty-four acres. He engaged in farming in the usual pioneer way, breaking the sod with oxen, and began the development of the farm. Two years later he rented the place and in 1863 traded it for other property. In 1860 he began working at his trade in Muscatine in a wagon and buggy shop, and followed it the most of the time until 1879. he then purchased his place of twenty-one acres at 2806 Mulberry avenue. Here he had a fruit and garden farm highly cultivated, which returned to him a substantial annual income. In 1853, Mr. Murphy was married in Muskingum county, O., to Susan Feagans, to which union three children were born, all of whom survive. His wife preceded him in death on June 5, 1906. Mr. Murphy has long been a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Recently he received a fifty-year membership certificate from the local order of Masons.
