Harriett Gates Meeker was born near Lowell, Wisconsin, April 13, 1849, fell a sleep in the arms of the Loving Savior at Cranston, Iowa, Jan. 8th, 1916, age 66 years, 8 months, 26 days. She came with her parents to Cedar township about the year of 52 and has spent practically all of her life in Muscatine county. She was married to Warren Meeker, March 1, 1866, and had she lived until the coming March she and her husband would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. To this union were born eight children, two of the preceding their mother to the land beyond the blue in their infancy the others are as follows; Carl W. of Ardon, Howard A. of Cedar Rapids, Mary Myrtle of Cranston, W. Edgar of Clinton, George W. of Tabernash, Colorado, and Harry C. of Arden. Besides the children she leaves a loving husband who feels the stress of many years of labor and service resting heavily upon his shoulders, a brother Horatio N. Gates a merchant of Cranston; a half brother Cylas R. Gates of Long Beach, Cal., 15 grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her death. She contracted pneumonia which resisted the untiring efforts of loving hands and medical skill, so with aching hearts and tear-dimmed eyes, she closed her eyes in that last long sleep, with the blessed hope of meeting beyond this veil of tears. She united, with the Bretheren church at Cranston about the year of '70 and while she never made any demonstrations with her religion she was content to serve in the home and do such little Christian duties that fell to her lot to preform. Already her many friends and neighbors know the life she lived so it is sufficient to say she was a kind neighbor, a loving and faithful wife, and noble mother and only heaven can reveal the true worth of her life here on earth.

BENJAMIN MIDDLETON----- Departed this life, April 1, 1880, at his residence on Muscatine Island and within the city limits, MR. BENJAMIN MIDDLETON, in the 60th year of his life. He was born in New Jersey, May 2, 1820, was married to Mary M. Hoover, Dec. 24, 1843, who was the mother of seven of his children. He was married a second time to Juliaetta A. Bonner, April 27, 1858, who still survives him and is the mother of four of his children. Mr. Middleton came to Iowa in 1853, and lived in Muscatine, where he remained until 1865, when he settled on his Island farm and where he contributed very largely in the development of the business of market gardening, which has given to the Island much of it's present notoriety. He was in connection with this business the inventor and patentee of a new method of raising early plants in beds heated by steam, which promised to be of great value in this branch of industry. His energy of character, close attention to business honesty and business integrity, general amability of temper, together with the strong social virtues, which he possessed in the relations of the affectionate husband, kind father and obliging neighbor, secured for him the respect and esteem of those who knew him best. In his death the community has lost one of the most valuable of mens. He was converted and united with the M.E.Church at a meeting held at Musserville by Rev. A.V.Francis in 1876, since which time he has lived a quiet, uniform and consistant Christian life. Modest and unassuming he never took any prominent part in the public services of the sanctuary, but what is probably in many cases of much greater value, he lived his religion in the home, in searching the Scriptures, in a correct everyday example, and in his liberal contribution to the support of the church. His end was peace. His afflictions were borne without murmuring, only expressing the hope that he would soon be at rest. Amoung his expressions were: "I know that my Redeemer liveth." "I know that Jesus will come for me." He stated that he did not wish to be in too great a hurry, and yet greatly desired to be at home with the Lord, saying to his wife at one time in view of their future reunion. "Oh do come soon." With frequent and earnest praying for the blessing of the Lord to rest upon all his loved ones, our neighbor, our friend, our brother, passed quietly and peacefully over the dark river to be, as we trust, forever with the Lord. by J.B.Hill.

He died instantly. ---- MILLER’s body was pinned in the wreckage of the car - which was demolished.
